If you ever have to have a computerized tomography (CT) scan of your chest you have to hold your breath. The scanners we use have a computer voice to coach the patient “breathe in”… “breathe out”…“hold your breathe”…“breathe”
I’m often paying attention to my breathing. When I’m cooking I count breaths instead of using a timer for when to open the grill and flipping the eggplant and zucchini, or stirring the cut-up veggies in the grill pan, or rotating the corn. Dad’s out there with a timer, flipping his burgers every minute on the dot. If you hadn’t guessed, I’m cooking vegetarian, and there’s no need to get the interior temp to a certain point. I also focus on my breathing when I am lying down in bed, trying to rest, or when I need to have something to concentrate on besides chaos. I’m a “high functioning” Autistic, and so sometimes something like the waiting room that serves 10 doctors was more than my brain wanted to handle. I was on the edge when I was able to go into the doctor’s office and she assured me I could take my time or even go home. Focusing on breathing warded things off until people started calling out things, and it helped me recover so that we could get through the important parts of what we’d planned.

Don’t think about breathing. Or yawning. Or doing both at the same time. Try not to think about those things..

HOPE IS THE THING WITH PRESENTS Emily Dickinson
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -That perches in the soul -And sings the tune without the words -And never stops – at all -
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard -And sore must be the storm -That could abash the little BirdThat kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -And on the strangest Sea -Yet – never – in Extremity,It asked a crumb – of me.

Now I’m thinking about breathing too!
