Lynn, I have a jade plant also that was given to me by a medical school professor about 35 years ago. She sadly died of breast cancer when treatments were not as advanced as they are now; however, I’ve always considered that plant lucky. The original is still alive and I’ve given small versions to many friends, especially those who are breast cancer survivors. I’m about to take one to a dear friend who just had a double mastectomy. I do know how you felt about Rupert!
I live in central Florida; there is NO way you can kill a plant here. I love to watch the way they grow toward the sun; I rotate my potted plants once every couple of weeks so they’ll grow straight.
In my northern Ontario living room, I had several spectacular plants. One was “Rupert,” a large 40 year old jade plant, the only plant I’ve ever named. Rupert was named because he stayed with me, no matter what. Every other house plant had died from maladies related to neglect; the plants that made up the lovely jungle in my window were simply survivors in spite of me. “Rupe” hung in there, no matter what. He was in for the long haul…and we hauled him from Lynn Lake, Manitoba to to North Bay, Ontario.
I have just sold my northern home and have moved to BC where friends and family reside, and winter is like a northern spring. The lovely folks who bought my Ontario home, graciously accepted the gift of my three big plants, one of which was Rupert! Just before the moving van was about to leave the driveway, and Katie, Lane and the kids were set for their long drive across Canada, Katie ran into my empty house and took a piece of Rupert. “He has to come with us to Vancouver!” she said. After all this time, you can’t abandon a friend!
And for any cat guardians out there: Jade is poisonous to our beloved fur babies so don’t go running out to buy one, like I would have done if not for Google. :D
We had a beautiful jade plant that we’d gotten as a small, underdeveloped thing, and my wife an I nursed it along and it became a real beauty.FYI: If a jade plant looks like it needs water, drooping, etc.don’t water it.It looks that way because it’s been over watered. I didn’t know you could drown a jade plant. I know it now, though.
The best solution I found to creating a ‘green look’ in my apartment, even though I kept forgetting to water the plants: I bought silk plants. They always look great…
I have a Christmas cactus that has survived for over 40 years, without much extra care and pampering. It’s really, really big. It blooms every year. There were years that it missed the flowering, but now I know how to correct the light for it.

Talking to your plants helps. But water helps more.

The only plants I have are the tough ones. If they can’t survive a couple of weeks while I’m away, they have no place in my house.

No indoor plants for me. Even if I did remember to water the darn things, my 5 cats would consider them a salad bar.

I love to garden. I have 44 roses, a big veggie garden, an orange tree…all my outside plants thrive! (They are ALL on an automatic watering system!)
I CANNOT grow a house plant. I forget to water them and they die every time!
