Topsider 1: “Are you sure about this?”Topsider 2: “I know I had my keys when I left the colony, and they were gone when we lit up that lizard colony. If they fell anywhere, they’d be about here.”Topsider 1: “Wouldn’t it be easier to get out and look for them yourself?”Topsider 2: “What, and get the suit dirty? I think not.”
They might not be able to see them. They can still hear the pinging of the homing device attached to the bottom of that brain, which is how they found Unity.
If it is Clive it would be only a NFC oder RFID chip with short range…..maybe only for logistic. And they recognized it as the burned down the other lizzards to ash.
The best guess I can come up with are that Clive has a transponder that is sending info on his location. It might be something designed to alert the TS to a PT that is in trouble. If the power supply to the brain is disconnected, the PT would be dead in the water and its drivers would be stranded. Thus it would make sense that the TS may have protocols that require them to search for stranded PTs.The other possibility involves the footprints that the group was leaving. Those would be visible beyond the ditto shield. Wally said that the ditto shield was 100 yards across. That would explain why the TS are lighting up the area around our group as opposed to shining a light directly on top of them.
I’m thinking that the chameleon abilities of the dittos aren’t perfect. The Topsiders may not be able to detect the presence of anything the dittos are screening, but they may be able to detect a background anomaly or absence of expected background pattern that the dittos can’t perfectly disguise. Perhaps the swirling searchlights are acquiring background data to establish a more precisely defined background and bring the anomaly more into focus, and allow a ground crew to investigate. Wally and company had better get moving, while the ditto anomaly can’t yet be precisely pinned down. However, their movement itself might be picked up, so that is a risk as well, but one which will become relatively weaker if they hunker down..
I told you guys that Clive probably came with a homing beacon. Didn’t I tell you? Yep. I told you. And I think I remember a couple of others telling you too.
If NFC and RFID are not working, who is to say Clive is not radioactive, or some type of transuranic isotope, perhaps a quantity of Tritium or some such is detectable to some degree as a beta emission or weak Gamma. The Dittoes may be capable of many things, but shielding non black body radiations may be beyond their grasp.
@all of you! You guys are way too technical for me, and I’ll bet you’re even too technical for Mr. Neathery. I don’t worry about “how” only about “what and when”.
Part of me is hoping that the scouts represent another player rather than just more fun-with-TSers, and they might represent more/better/different tech. As for detection, Clive could have an idiot simple RF transponder and the scouts are trying to figure out the emission versus no visual.
Or the story could go as simple and ruthless as dumping Clive and continuing on their way :(
But, as this is our E-vile Master, Arron, here, who knows where it will go?
I know they’ve been through a lot and could really use the sleep, but being they’re sleeping in the open and expecting this kind of thing every second, don’t you think it’s odd that Holly and Chik are still asleep? I’d be up and awake the moment I heard anyone talking.

Remember that mass is still detected even behind ditto shields… That’s how they fired at Marx’ ship a chapter or two earlier

it must be a homming device on the brain sara said they got there sooner than she thought they would
