…Smokey is the wedge between Mona and happiness. Of course, if she ever gets rid of him, we lose the cartoon.
Yes to Smokey coming between Mona and true happiness, no to the strip ending if Smokey dies. The strip ends when Cathy marries Irving–I mean, Mona finds closure to her issues and is no longer an iceberg of insecurity. Besides, the strip is strong enough and good enough that it can survive Smokey’s death.
I don’t know how Fake Smokey would cope, though. I mean, this is all he’s got.
This is a neat trick. We get to see the young Mona, budding, vulnerable and clinging; but the current Mona that we love so well still stays her cool, sarcastic, smoking, cynical self (with the possible exception of the occasional Hawaiian beach boy).
The only improvement I could suggest would be for her to have an acne attack. (The young Mona, that is.)

Listen to the bunny.

The bunny seems to be missing the point with his scheme. Mona is sad! That is not the desired outcome!

Mona will be happy, though, if she “becomes a woman” in almost no time.
