The Buckets by Greg Cravens for October 03, 2015
Transcript:
I don't think I'm comfortable with Toby having an overnight party that includes girls. Tell him he can't have the party. But he and Sheila are good, trustworthy kids. This is a sign they're growing up. Tell him he can have the party. This just seems like too much too soon, though. And we can't stay up all night to chaperone. Tell him he can't have a party. Larry, are you going to make up my mind, or not?

Larry knows better than that. Sara doesn’t want him to “make up her mind.” She just wants him to be a sounding board.

I wonder if Sheila is more “eager” than Toby…

I’m afraid not Sarah.

“Sure! Tell him he can/can’t have the party! Simple!”

He can have the party, but girls have to leave by a certain hour. It’s not rocket science!

Let’s make it easy for you: you don’t like it. You’re the parents. You get to say no. Pressure of “all the other parents are allowing it” should not get any kid any further than the phrase “but all the cool kids are doing it.” (Yeah, my kids told me co-ed sleepovers were a thing now and I told them not in my house it’s not—and they were relieved. After that I told them anything you need to be against the rules, it is; glad to be of service.)

Also, think it through: what’s the worst thing that could happen if you said no. What’s the worst thing that could happen if you said yes. There you go.

I feel like I’m on a seesaw here …
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
