Well, people said the DeGroots were getting everything done with their “never ending stash of money”… but Nancy’s words show that that’s not the case… – At least Luann is “chin up” about the matter, on the surface …or maybe she is now realizing that she had her answer from Quill this whole time.. Maybe it was just taking the rest of her some time to catch up to what her ears heard…

So Luan has “asked” about Prudence? Did she ask what she looks like, how old she is, is she married, etc.? No, she just asked “Who’s Prudence?” and Quill replied “Just a pal.” Those are apparently some very informative dialogues that these two lovebirds share, wouldn’t you say?

Is it true that Prudence will allow her show to be produced without getting paid for it, she will direct the show for free, she will have to pay to travel to Pitt, and Frank will charge her rent to stay in the DeGroot home? Apparently the holiday show is some variant of “A Christmas Carol”, and Frank will play Scrooge.

Or another scenario: Prudence is at least 20 years their senior, has no interest in Quill at all (other than his acting ability) and comes on the scene: “Luann! I am SO happy to finally meet you! Quill talks about you all the time.”Luann & Pru become BFFs.

Will 1000 more people post guesses herein about what Pru looks like, before Luann simply asks Quill to tell her (or better yet, to show her a photo)? This endless speculation is pointless, give how easily it would be resolved if the title character only acted with a lick of sense.

@seismic-2I don’t know that I’d use the word “stupid”. The characters have always been able to think and act in ways that work for the gag of the moment, with only a vague acknowledgement of the real world. The situation with TJs insurance comes to mind, where Brad evidently didn’t tell his parents of his suspicions about TJs possible arson.

Then there’s the bit with Quill’s employment in the food truck, almost certainly in violation of whatever sort of visa an Australian national has to come to the States to go to school. Gunther’s trip to Peru is another example of the sort of assumption that the real world will bend and stretch to accommodate whatever the gag needs to be. Mr. Grey doesn’t seem to have charged the De Groots for his time, or the services of the construction guys he provided.

A jealous (or at least worried!) girl who doesn’t even ask her boyfriend what his new “pal” (with whom he is constantly in touch) looks like? Why the heck doesn’t she? Has that no occurred to her to do? Or is her relationship with Quill (after 3 years of dating!) so tenuous that she doesn’t want to risk making him angry? It’s hard to explain these people’s behavior, unless they are in fact simply dumb as doorknobs.

For those thinking about how Prudence may get charged for rent and such, though she’s supposed to put on the play for free- well,as a possibility: maybe the arrangement will be that she stays in town a little longer than just the time for putting on the play? She could be “boarding” for a while, upon considering staying there beyond the play, and it would indeed make for more stories over time…..

OK, clearly Team Evans wants to put Prudence into the same home with Luann, as a source of conflict. Fine, that’s the way these things are usually done. But there was no need to make her pay rent! Frank should be so grateful to Prudence for the use of her show and for her donating her directing labor that he offers to put her up in the family’s spare bedroom so that she won’t have to pay for a motel “as the very least that I can do” (which in fact it really is!!!)..Same result, but then Frank looks like a normal human being. As it is now, he looks like a thoroughly unlikable and ungrateful crank who wants to squeeze even more money out of a person who is already giving away so much to him. Also, by not directly asking Quill just what Prudence is like (in terms of looks, age, and dating/marital status), Luann looks like a dunce. Does Team Evans really not care what they do to the way their characters are perceived, just so that they can string together their improbable plot (in ways that are totally unnecessary to make the story work, to boot!)?

I think Luann should be looking at this from another perspective. While we have had all kinds of speculation here about Prudence’s age, sexual orientation, and appearance, Luann has obviously assumed that Pru is a young, attractive, heterosexual woman. And since Quill is producing the play that Prudence will be directing, it’s likely that they will be spending some time together in meetings about the play.-Now, if Luann’s goal is to shut down a potential romance between Quill and Pru, where would it be better for Luann to have Pru spending her nights — the DeGroot house, or a hotel room? There’s not going to be anything going on between Quill and Pru at the DeGroots’ where Frank, Nancy, or Luann might be hovering around at any time. But if Pru were staying at a hotel, the situation could be different.-I also agree with those here who have said that if Prudence is providing the play and her services as a director for free, it’s inappropriate for Frank and Nancy to be charging her for the room.

    > Obviously the real reason is that Team Evans wants to hold back plot details from us, but in doing so they make Luann/Quill’s relationship appear non-existent.>And it’s totally unnecessary. The obvious follow-up to this premise if that Luann simply asks Quill what Pru is like. Then on Saturday, Quill pulls out his cell phone and says, “Here, I’ll show you.” In the final panel Luann is shown staring at Pru’s photo (which we can’t see) with a look of total astonishment on her face. Then in the Sunday strip, Frank and Nancy remind us that life is lousy when you’re middle-aged and your daughter has a messy room. Next, on Monday it’s time to switch to a completely unrelated story arc, so for the next two weeks Brad and Toni once again demonstrate that they have the combined IQ of broccoli..After that, it’s nearly Thanksgiving in the USA, so it’s definitely time for Pru to arrive in Pitt and start setting up production of the holiday show. We see her emerge through the doors to the baggage claim at LAX, and she looks like… whatever. Mystery solved, but the suspense has served its purpose, and it was done without making Q & Lu look like total idiots and strangers to each other.

Nobody knows if it is any good, if Prudence is a flake, if it has any appeal to a town like Pitts, but you are betting people will come to the play because it’s the opening of a new venue. I believe people will leave with a better impression of the new venue if the play is good.

But the point is….It was decided to keep everything “neat and small”, and since we’re talking about a “close knit community”, Pitts is the place where things happen, as far as this strip is concerned. - Riverdale was purposely made to be an “unnamed town” (regardless of it’s actual real life source cities), in order to keep everything “warm and personal” and easier to facilitate the readers’ identifying with “average life in an average town”, even when the comic featured lots of stories with drawn versions of real life celebrities who were guest stars and other assorted famous people (famous within the universe of the comic book). – Then there’s Keith on “Good Times”. Why would he want to marry someone like Thelma (in terms of economic background), when he could have had “Gold Diggin’ Gina” or “Love ’Em and Leave ’Em Loretta”, as a then “up and coming” NFL rookie, about to be drafted and sign a contract? It was to tell more stories, and find other dimensions of interest to pursue… it kept things in the “smallness” of their world, until the series’ end…

We aren’t really sure how much of the writing is done by Karen and how much by Greg, but perhaps a better question is: who is doing the editing of this strip? Someone at the syndicate should step in and say, “Look, Greg and Karen, this ‘Prudence and Luann have to live together under a single roof’ is a fun idea, but charging her rent??? You really need to change that, since it makes Frank come across as a total jerk.” Whoever’s job it is to say that, you’re really dropping the ball these days. So, just who is the “Luann” editor, anyway?

So we all agree that charging Pru rent is ridiculous. I can’t believe that Karen or Greg could be so dense about this, but the alternative, that they are including this scenario on purpose, just seems to make F & N look like jerks which doesn’t make sense.-Or maybe Greg started charging Karen rent when she was fifteen years old like my mom did to me so for her it’s just normal behavior.-I think Prudence will be young and attractive. It’s too boring and predictable if she turns out to be otherwise.-All the comments about Luann’s lack of initiative to find out what Prudence looks like are so true. Any normal girl would have looked her up on FB ages ago, or simply asked Quill to see a photo of her, geesh. Apparently FB doesn’t exist in the Luanniverse.

They’ll rent the room for mid-November to mid-January, two months. A bedroom in a house, no private kitchen or bath, goes for maybe $350-400/month. In return, they look like ingrates and risk alienating their daughter. *Do they really need the money that bad? Couldn’t Nancy make like Blondie and maybe do a little catering on the side instead?

I have driven between LA and San Diego often enough, but about 3 times I did in fact fly (once, on a jet!) between the two cities on the connecting leg of a coast-to-coast flight. And Luann has driven to LAX to pick up Quill when he flies from Australia. Since Greg Evans lives in northern San Diego County, it is likely that this is the setting for the strip, so it wouldn’t be hard to go to LAX to pick up Pru. Whether they do that or go to Lindberg Field depends on just whether she is flying from, which flights are booked up, what fares are cheaper (since Frank apparently isn’t paying for it!), etc.

The whole warehouse fantasy, straight out of Mickey Rooney as Andy Hardy is terribly lame.Hard to believe a carroonist never took an art class, but that whole plot was lame. I never studied theater, but that whole angle seems totally contrived. And the idea of charging rent to a professional who is lending you a hand makes no sense. The authors have good characters and a good setting that is being squandered on lame story lines.
