Go Bernice!

Apparently, Bernice is immune to Pru’s charm offensive. But by pulling Luann into the fight in the way that she has, Bernice is being kind of offensive herself…

This is excellent theater. The ball could bounce in any direction.

I would bet Pru turns out to be gay. Evans has yet to touch that topic.

You know that phrase ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’? I’m pretty sure it refers to first-year psych students. They know just enough not to realize how little they know.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Pretty much what I was surmising the other day, that it’s indeed a possibility (at the very least) that Pru could be “in it for the long haul”. Or perhaps at least just for a temporary hold on a “U-Haul”….

Barry1941 about 9 years ago
Very rude behavior on Bernice’s part.
Sisyphos about 9 years ago
Bernice is trying to provoke a fight. I guess she feels, consciously or subconsciously, that her “best friend” status is somehow threatened by the relentlessly likeable Pru….

Okay, let me SEE if I got This straight.
Bern, a Gal who has repeatedly FAILED in the Romance Department and who let’s the World PUSH Her Around, Is offering “Advice” to Luann on HER “Love Life” by planting the Seeds of Doubt Concerning the REAL Intentions of Ms Motor-Mouth Here.
WORKS for Me.
Hey Bern? When You WIN, be SURE to GRAB Pru’s “Hat” as a Trophy!
Then BURN It….,

Most people working in theater have histrionic personality disorder. Assuming it’s actually a disorder. Just saying. (Personal experience speaking here.)

LuAnn will, and then Pru will pull out her copy of the boomerang necklace…

Notice the ‘Show’ with a ‘?’. Makes me wonder if the show itself is secondary to Pru’s mission. Bernice is getting on more than one nerve here. Side note: saw a woman with a hat strangely resembling Pru’s in the deli of our local supermarket the other night. Her teenage daughter was also wearing a hat. But their other clothes were fairly normal (jeans, etc). I dunno.

Looks like we’re in for a whole week of Bernice badmouthing Pru.
Some commenters here have wished for more conflict and drama in the strip. Guess this is it. Be careful what you wish for, ’cause you may get it.
Luanaphile about 9 years ago
Bernice’s behavior seems poorly motivated by the Evans. I can see her being skeptical, but this seems out of character.

Three weeks? I thought it was to be over Thanksgiving break for th openning to the theater, art gallery & resturant!

What do you do when not only do you have a 2 ton elephant in the room, but also the 800 lb gorilla?
Luanaphile about 9 years ago
Pru should say, “Okay, enough of that, I’m outa here!”

This is the first time I’ve been able to read the comments in a few weeks due to moving. I am really surprised at the response to Bernice confronting Prudence. Here she is being a true friend and most are getting down on her. I love her calling out the eyebrowless one, and demanding to know her true intentions toward Quill. And, unless Montylc2001 is correct, Bernice may just be saving Luann and Quill from a regretful breakup. I have never loved Bernice more.
dre7861 about 9 years ago
I’ll leave the issue of whether Bernice is acting appropriately to others to hash out; but one thing you can say she is finding out information that the other characters are too wishy-washy to find out.
wantcomicsnow about 9 years ago
Bernice is being an A-hole. She really should shut up.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Upon further evaluation, I think I’ll change my comment to pontificate the absolution in the resolution of this arc, as follows: (1) To reasess the Quid Pro Quo, to reflect more of the E Pluribus Unum…(2) To allow reinfusion of the Atropa belladonna to overpopulate my olfactorial and gastrointestinal intake faculties(3) To promulgate the exposure on the calcification, henceforthtowith, the encyclopaedic (or, should I say, the cyclomania?) in effect the cantilever bridging quandary, to wit, the absolution of said such, and something or other, et cetera…et cetera…et cetera… – There! It’s all in black and white (okay, and maybe some blues, greens and goldenrods)! I’ve now narrowed down the whole situation to one thing: Writers’ choice… readers’ consumption decision perogative… in other words, I can safely guess that what will happen next is that the story will go as it is planned… – And as a further point, no matter which way it goes, the author lives with their decision to publish or not, and the reader lives with the choice of allowing their eyeballs to peep.. or not…

So it seems Pru intends to stay after the play ends. I think she wants to take the lead in planning and production of the plays. She sees a door wide open to get her career going.

You may not have noticed this, but authors have been self-publishing even before the Age of the Internet.
My late step father owned a printing company. Several of his jobs involved printing a small run of books for local authors who failed to find a publishing house interested in their work, so they brought the books out themselves. The author is then responsible for all the marketing, including persuading book stores to carry the work on consignment.
This can be a lot of work, but it is the way many writers got started. The internet makes it a lot easier for writers to do this now.

You mention in your post that it’s a comic.

Also as a way of supposition: Remember how long it took for Quill to finally “tell off” Tiffany? Sometimes his “warning indicator” seems to be busted. Could be that Prudence read into the whole thing whatever he allowed (or neglected to clarify, for that matter). – Could have been that he told her how great Luann is as a girl, but maybe not how great Luann is, as “his girl” …not that he would cheat, but it could be that his communication skills are lacking (when it comes to dealing with the “fairer sex”). The only thing that could make it truly shocking, though, is if he starts humming “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” (♫, both the original and the Robert Palmer Version)…
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Actually, I meant during Drama Camp… – In that arc at the pool, it would have seemed as though Quill was “up for grabs”, but Tiffany was the one who wanted to “tag along”, while Luann and Quill had already started “hitting it off”…
RolloTheGrouch about 9 years ago
“You mean because he and Luann thought it was hilarious to lead her on?”
Ahh, the good old days when the strip had real humor.
ACTIVIST1234 about 9 years ago
Got to thinking about Bern’s assumption yesterday that Pru was here to “take Luann’s guy”. We should have found that offensive— Quill is an adult male, not a possession. He doesn’t belong to Luann. If he wants to have a relationship with Pru, that’s his business. But if Lu wants to be the only one, she needs to work to make it worth his while.*But people are NOT property. Quill can date anyone he wants.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
LOL, yep! – And funny thing is that old trick has found new legs, these days.. one reason I have to keep the remote handy…

Ha Ha … at times I love Bernice’s straight up talk, the fact that she is not wooed by Pru’s charms. Pru is a master of wrapping people around her finger. Maybe she has met her match in Bern, i.e. someone that she cannot manipulate. I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Dave, I think you are right….."…more underneat the “focused on other things” statement than [just] Quill"While I think (at least HOPE VERY MUCH) that Pru has her eyes set on Quill…. I think that there must be other motives as well. Some of the ones I have thought of include: 1) perhaps Pru wants to transfer to Moony and is out here to visit and/or complete the transfer process, 2) perhaps Pru is out here for some sort of audition set for after the holidays and is willing to put on the show as a “cheap” way to scope out the area and get board (possibly free), c) perhaps she is near graduation and is looking at Moony or other California schools for applications to graduate schools, d) or maybe she is a free spirit and just ends up flitting around from place to place because she feels “moved” to do so.
Argy.Bargy2 about 9 years ago
And on another topic, what are ya fixin’ for Thanksgiving?
RSH about 9 years ago
“….I think there’s more underneath the “focused on other things” statement than Quill. Possible that Prudence didn’t drive all the way to Pitts just to help out Quill and Frank and Nancy … something else going on ( besides the sleazy speculation that’s just too easy.)….”-———————————————————————————-
yeah… but that conversation between Pru and Quill behind closed door suggests the very latter… I.e. she drove all night and couldn’t wait to see Quill again. And she was talking in a very suggestive tone. That said, Pru is definitely a wild card; she may have many motives that we don’t yet know about. I see a possible scenario where Luann ends up doing most of the production work and earns back the respect of Quill.
