Burgundy, I agree that the second panel probably ought to be a thought bubble rather than a spoken balloon. Ms. Babcock has used thought bubbles in the past, so this may simply be a lapse in execution. It’s been known to happen.
Would it be a big surprise if he was sandbagging her?
She gets to order first, and orders salad thinking he’d going to get the rat’. Then he orders steak.
That would be in character for him, from what we’ve seen. Or at least it would be for Pierre.
If the guy is picking the restaurant, just pick a place where the nicest thing on the menu is still within your budget. It’s better to take her to Denny’s and say “Order whatever you like!” than to take her to Fleur de Lis and say “Stick to the appetizers.”
Always awkward. The guy wants to let the girl order first to be polite and the girl wants the guy to order first so she can guage the appropriate spending level. :D
Ask ‘What are you ordering?’ and keep an eye on how he treats the waitstaff.

I love salad. I remember she brought some home for me in her purse.

Marg, I feel compelled to comment on your comment, but I’m totally at a loss for words. “Cheap date” somehow doesn’t fit you.

MARG I took a girl out once on a first date. That Tower of Lobster looked wonderful. Did I mention I took her out once?
My mother told my sister, “ask what he’s going to have. Never order too cheap nor too expensive. Does he tip cheap, showy, or sensible?”

No, Lewreader, you mentioned you took her out once on a first date. How many times have you taken other girls out on a first date?

@ lewreader - my mom told me the same thing, she added to watch how he treated the waitstaff and other workers.
