Mortimer's original owner is out of jail, Marcy! Oh no! I didn't mean "Oh, no" I mean Im glad he's paid his debt to society and all.... But i was hoping he'd be sent away a LOT longer! No, wait...what I mean is... hes reformed too...which really makes this awful!

Er, no, chipping the dog is never a bad thing. He just needs to transfer ownership in the database.

People get too attached to their animals. Dump the dog, get a new one. “Oh No, he’s like FAMILY!” Well, he IS family, but he IS a DOG. Dump him and, like others have suggested, go to a shelter and find one that’s equally or more in need of a loving home.

Return the dog, but try to get a deal of seeing him sometimes. Be friendly to the reformed con, there’s good deed 1.
Then go to a shelter and rescue a dog from there. There’s a good deed 2.

When someone else has legitimate claim to what YOU want, it is tempting to demonize that one to delegimatize that claim, to make them out as unworthy, undeserving..Marcy is doing well fighting the temptation.
