A few years back, daughter and I were training for a spring 1/2 marathon. It was January and bitter cold but we needed to do our 4 miles soooooo we went to the nearby Super Walmart and walked around the perimeter till we had met our goal. Got some looks but no one told us to leave!

Here in Phoenix the big indoor shopping malls open early for “mall walkers.” There are even clubs for them. It is simply too hot to walk outside here in the summer. Our local mall is 3.5 miles…three laps on the second floor, two laps on the first floor. Do it in under an hour (I’m 72)

We add extra steps in the grocery stores, Lowe’s, Menards. All great places to get in extra steps that add up during the day. Someone in the paint dept at Lowe’s asked if they could help me and I confessed about just getting steps while my husband shopped. She proceeded to tell me the exact number I would get circling the store:)

Only most fitness trackers don’t work if you’re holding a shopping cart. Your arm needs to be swinging to count the steps.

Up here in the PNW, we too have Mall Walks. Vancouver Mall is 1 1/2 miles upper and lower. It’s often too rainy to walk outside, and our Community Center has a walk, 13 laps is a mile.

This would have sounded mad to me if I hadn’t lived in PA for a couple of years. Too hot and sticky a lot of time in the summer, too cold in the winter. And nowhere local to walk outside anyway – had to drive to the state park or Valley Forge so the nearby mall came in handy at times. Glad to be back in the UK with public footpaths and ‘right to roam’ …. OK, so we need a lot of Goretex and boots most of the year (esp this one).
