Frazz by Jef Mallett for December 15, 2015
Transcript:
Mrs. Olsen: If you settle for just ok on this quiz, you'll get used to just ok and do just ok on the test, and you'll keep doing just ok until you turn 40 and realize the job you hate has been just ok the whole time. Red jacket boy: Duh! You don't ask Mrs. Olsen to turn up the heat. You ask Frazz to turn up the heat! Blue boy: Ok. Yellow shirt boy: And not just because he's the janitor.

Does Mrs Olsen think her job is more than OK?

I’m guessing Frazz is revered because of his subtle way of “turning up the heat” on these sophisticated but sensitive kids. Mrs. Olsen uses a sledgehammer, and Frazz leads a kid to his own answer. Quite a talent! AND he can work the furnace!

“Life is a series of changes every decade of so. Maybe it just gets harder to adjust later in life.”.Most changes don’t follow a schedule. And if you avoid thinking about change and how you might deal with it, you won’t be prepared to deal with it when it does come. But imagining different possible scenarios and experimenting — in your imagination — with various ways to deal with them can prepare you to deal comfortably with change when it does come, even if it’s not something you had specifically imagined.

Fail. Set-up too contrived, again.

We build our world every day, and if we don’t incorporate the large and small changes on a gradual basis, we tend to be overwhelmed when our carefully stabilized existence has to face them all at once. The Void yawns. But if we have some spiritual fortitude, we “can learn to be [us] in time. It’s easy.” (I try never to miss a chance to quote The Beatles!). Sounds like you and your wife figured it out. You must be bright, aware people open to welcoming necessary change instead of dreading it. The fun part is realizing that the plans you make early on before retirement will have to be modified because we’re all different people 25-45 years later and have to be flexible. I sometimes think of myself as a pretzel!

… and the advice was actually quite good

The nice thing about her statement is that the whole class probably heard it, and will be thinking about it.
