The only “F” I ever received in school on my report card was because research papers were due the same month that I was sick – for the entire month – with mononucleosis. The teacher (who was actually a substitute for the teacher out on maternity) insisted that I keep up with the paper, even though my parents notified her that I was too sick to go to the library & we didn’t own a set of encyclopedias. To this day, my parents disavow any knowledge of me receiving an “F”.
How does Lucy know she needs Volume 5? Usually you want to look up a certain word. You can’t tell off-hand in which volume that word is included (except letter A or Z). Is Lucy such a nerd to know the distribution of the letters by heart? I don’t think so.
There’s only one answer I can imagine: she had used that volume before, then put it back. Conclusion: The right volume is the one which smells the most after Lucy.
But Snoopy is distracted. Lucy wants Vol. 5. He’s not sure what she wants. Then he’s blamed for bringing the wrong one and gets frustrated. His frustration tolerance isn’t very high, deep inside he wants to reward himself with food. He starts licking instead of smelling.
You could have pulled off the trick, Snoopy. Next time focus on your strengths and don’t let yourself get distracted.
We still have a 23 (give or take) volume set of the Britannica, circa 1926 (I’m too lazy to go up and check the actual date) but it is handy to look up historical names and events. Like did you know that there was too much traffic on the Strand (in London) and something ought to be done about it (with photo).
I picked up a one-volume encyclopedia at a garage sale and discovered that it was the source for a couple of CD-ROM encyclopedias. The short little articles from the print edition had been carried over, word for word, to the CD. I later found that my one-volume encyclopedia was an abridgement of another one-volume encyclopedia that I got later.
Lucy, you should stick to things he knows. Tell him to go down to the basement and bring back a potato.
If Snoopy can churn out all of those manuscripts starting with “It was a dark and stormy night”, who wouldn’t he be able to read what’s on the spine of an encyclopedia?

How dumb are YOU, Lucy? Asking a dog to help you with your homework—you must be either terminally lazy or totally desperate.
We all know Snoop is smarter than Lucy; smart enough not to need homework.

I used to LOVE reading the World Book Encyclopedia just for fun. Loved the gold painted at the edge of the pages, too.

Lucy, you have to remember that Snoopy is a dog and can not retrieve books.

I loved our encyclopedia set when I was a kid, but I have to admit, it’s a lot easier to update information on the web.

If this comic strip had been written today, Lucy would have asked Snoopy to Google something for her.

Lucy should not call Snoopy dumb. Lucy is the one who wants help with her homework.
