I’m with Adam. Nothing like being a kid for a while.

Don’t you remember stair sledding? We did it, and the only thing that bugged our mom was the giant window right at the bottom of the stairs. Amazingly, neither we nor it were ever broken.

Back in my day (thus remembers the geezer-ette), we didn’t use helmets OR boxes!

My brother and i tried this one time. At the bottom of the stairs directly ahead was the wall to the dining room, to the right, the door to the living room and to the left, the door to the den. Our parents are sitting in the living room while all this nonsense is going on. We take off on a long piece of cardboard. At the third step i slip off the back, my brother flies down, hits the wall to the dining room with enough force to make a kid sized “dent” in the wall and lands back at the bottom of the stairs. My parents open the living room door and see my brother and the dented wall, ask if he’s ok, and he responds “Let’s do that again!” He coulda used the helmet.

I remember when my kids did this with their old plastic covered “youth” mattress. No helmets, and no injuries or damage. Their Dad however, put a stop to it. Guess he was afraid they’d put a hole in the wall. I was inclined to want to go sledding with them, but didn’t get it done before my hubby came home.

We used to do something similar to this when we’d go on sea trials on the boat. When they’d put a 15 degree up angle on the boat, we’d slide down the center passageway in the machinery room. The only bad thing was the knurled knobs on the panels which lined the p’way. They hurt when you hit them or scraped them going by.

I dislocated my thumb doing this because I went head first with my hands stretched out in front of me…. My parents weren’t angry, but they weren’t rich either, so my dad popped my thumb back in place (he almost vomited from the feeling of it going in the socket!) and threw some ice on it.

    Good Times ;)

Our kids did this when they were little - they’re teens now - and they were so reckless that we just got used the the loud thump that meant injuries. Every time we heard it, we called out, “You got blood?” If they could answer, we knew they were conscious. If they said, “Yes,” we came with the bandages. They never broke anything till they went to school and started playing other games with the same reckless abandon.
