I don’t know in other countries , here in Italy , most in the South , with the some amount converted in italian value it was possible to go up or down with the condominium elevator . This happened until the end of the 70s ,nowadays I’m not sure .

Pennies are souvenirs now, they can be made and sold for less than two cents.

We used to get Bazooka Bubble gum for 2 cents, but that was a long time ago.

I have heard that the govt would like to discontinue the penny as it costs more and one cent to make a penny. - BTW, don’t do the penny (or anything else) on a railroad track. It can be extremely dangerous.

Arcades used to be a penny, believe it or not. Of course the machines weren’t as splashy as they are today. My favorite was a light gun with a mechanical bear that moved right to left and left to right, it would switch direction when you hit it.

most museums have machines that for .75 you can mash a penny with an imprint of something in the museum.

I found 33cents once. Yes, all in pennies. That’s not the point, it was THIRTY THREE CENTS. I take my pennies and save them. One penny by itself, not worth much. But if you save them, you would be surprise on how quickly they accumulate.

Pennies in bulk have uses, but that’s an incredibly ungainly way to pay for anything. An individual penny is, for all intents and purposes, useless.For those penny defenders out there, consider this: We used to have half-cent coins, but they were phased out in 1857 (when their value was a heck of lot more than a modern penny). Do you feel their absence now? Round everything to the nearest nickel (hell, round everything to the nearest dime), and in 10 years you’ll wonder why we ever bothered with anything smaller.

If we don’t have pennies, then prices will simply be rounded UP…you can bet on that…

That’s why, here in Canada, we got rid of them. It was crazy to use something that cost more to make than what it’s face value was,

I’ve used them as shims in a pinch when doing carpentry. It’s an old trick. I’ve come across Indian Head pennies used that way a hundred years ago.

We had these in our stores and they were serviced regularly by a Ford Gumball salesperson……the price for a gum ball was always just one penny!

On the subject of rounding up, we already do that anyway. If ground beef costs $2.99 per pound (or however much ground beef costs) and you order a pound and a half, do you really wish we still had half pennies so you could accurately be charged four dollars, forty-eight-and-a-half cents? if you buy a one-dollar item that’s marked down a third, to you mind paying 67¢ instead of 66¢ (or 66.6666666666666¢)?

Pennies are stupid and should be eliminated. If you’re buying cans of soup and five different brands are priced $1.00, 99¢, 90¢, 80¢, and 79¢, economy might be a factor in choosing one of the last two rather than one of the first two, but the choice between A and B (or between D and E) is going to depend on which one you think tastes better.

And it was only last week that I heard not only the repeat of the refrain that the penny costs more to make than it’s worth, but also the added chorus that now the nickel carries the same stigma.

I heard that at one time, a congressman from Illinois would block any attempt to eliminate the penny because Lincoln is on the penny and there are parking meters still take pennies. I don’t know if this congressman is still around?

we use pennies as metal shims. They can keep two stones from quite touching. This is useful in mmument work.

The problem is that citizens are too lazy to dig up exact change that’s right in there pockets. Whenever I pay for something with cash, I do my best to use all the change I have (hoping the final price isn’t higher than 75 cents on the final dollar amount).

When consumers don’t pay businesses with pennies when possible, very often businesses will get penny rolls from the bank so they can produce the change in pennies.

Good citizens should try to use proper change when paying via cash. It’s the responsible thing to do for our country.

I use a quarter to check my tires. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head using a penny, it’s too late as you’re tire is now illegal. If you can see the top of Washington’s head with a quarter, you still got time to legally use the tires and get them changed out.
