Frazz by Jef Mallett for January 30, 2016
Transcript:
Mrs. Olsen: The end of December is a harsh reminder that the years fly by. But the end of January is an even harsher reminder that it's not going to let up. Caulfield: Someday she'll thank me for making some of her afternoons go so slow. Frazz: It'll be years, but they'll go by fast.

When you forget what year it is, then you’re really in trouble.

It’s a bit of an illusion…..When you are 10, 5 years is 50% of your life, when you are 50, 5 years is only one tenth of your life…..So they seem to go quicker, because they are smaller parts of the whole….But it happens, trust me….The years start flying by, not even stopping to say hello….Things I think just happened a couple of years ago, always turn out to be at least 10 years ago…

And then there is the cruelty of dementia to add to the mix. My father-in-law is in a long-term-care facility to recuperate after a bad fall. After the therapist tells him it is 2016 (along with a couple other things to test his short-term memory), he looked at my husband and said its 1961—the year hubby was born. The therapist had him just look at her and went through the whole series again. He again said it was 1961. So sad, but that was a great year for him. 2016 hasn’t been a good year for him thus far; but, my, how time does fly!
