Arlo: Yes, we have a lot of books. Maybe we could get rid of a few!
Janis: Books are old friends to me! Which old friends would you have me 'get rid of'?
Janis: Oh, sure! Today, it's "Windows 98 For Dummies," tomorrow it's Barbara Kingsolver!!

How about “Not Throwing Books Out, For Dummies”…OK, maybe not for that one….

I’m with Janis on this one. Outside of a very few textbooks and some fiction where I just could not stomach the language used without benefit to the story, once I have my clutches on a book it is never getting away.

My GF still uses Win 98.
She points out that no one is writing viruses for it now.

My wife and I have over 4,000 books in our library. I know I will never read some of them again. Those I try to throw out. But not the ones I wrote, never those.

We will occasionally cull through our collection of paperback books, however, hardbacks usually are here to stay. Therefore, on our favorite authors(and surprisingly, we have a few in common), we try to find hardback books. Although ebooks are now being a bit more common, still like holding real books.

I have been worrying myself for two years now about 25 boxes of books that are stored in a building that we will have to tear down some day. I don’t want to lose them; I have no place to put them.

Books are not things to be thrown away. Maybe fiction that borders on trash, but certainly not anything that has meaning. You bought it for a reason didn’t you. Even if the material is old and out dated (medical stuff for example) sometimes it is fun to go back and see how things were. And as for donating them to a library and then seeing them sold—first a library can’t put everything on the shelf they are given, and second why didn’t you ask before you gave them?

I have sold some of my old books at rummage sales, and also given some to a local nursing home. Either way, those books are used by someone.

I still have DOS for dummies. The Library doesn’t want it.

I’ve found some rare and collectible books at a library book sale, such as a 1964 New York World’s Fair Progress Report. I almost felt bad for paying so little.

I did good this year. I culled one of three college chemistry textbooks and the manual for a 20-year old version of Autosketch.

Our church used to have book sales, and when it was time to clean up afterward, each person helping seemed to end up with two stack – one they were packing into boxes and one they were taking home to read.

Just got rid of a batch of old computer books — and I’m a packrat. I donated them to a nonprofit — I’ve moved on but maybe somebody else can use them…

I went through my own book collection just last fall and sent several boxes to the local thrift shop. I know that someone will get use out of them.

There are some awesome games that only work on 98 and not the newer OS’s. That is why I still use 98 on a virtual machine on my Win7 and Win10 computers.

I’m with Janis… I still have my books on CP/M and everything since. Books are for keeping or sharing but never for getting rid of.
