As the son of an artist, I can relate to Beardo. Being an artist is not the way to get rich. In fact it can be a way to poverty. A book I read in my late teens cured me of wanting to be an artist. The first paragraph pointed out that the average income of a free-lance artist was at the sub-poverty level. And this was written when Picasso was alive to keep the average up.Art as a career is a hard one and must be pursued as one that one loves. To keep food on the table and a roof over the head of the artist’s family, an additional income is needed.
By the way, my mother was the artist. And she had a patron of her art career in my dad. Because of his support, she has achieve a degree of regional fame, but never has her artwork ever brought in enough income to support a family.
Who told this kid the lie that publishing books automatically makes you a millionaire? I don’t think that even happens to everyone who makes the Times bestseller list.
