This is the technique used by all children in my city. Their mothers give in rather than put up with the noise. As adults, the “kids” continue to believe that “no” doesn’t mean “no,” it means “keep pushing.”
@LeadingEdgeI saw the Blue Men Group perform last year; it was pretty cool. I especially liked it as I also play the drums. Did you ever see them perform?
the old adage: “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” would be apropos here. Flip side, mom is not holding her ground. The score is: Calvin – 1, Mom – 0. Something all too true about this scenario.
Her problem is that she thought the question was whether to let him take Hobbs or not. The question was how to punish him so that he never yelled at his mother again. That behavior is to never be tolerated. My youngest daughter started to throw a tantrum when I told her she couldn’t have a candy bar at the check out stand. I picked her up and nose to nose I explained that her sisters had never thrown a tantrum and she wouldn’t either or I would spank her butt right there in front of everyone in line. She looked around at all the smiling people and shut up. She never attempted to do it again. They have to believe you mean it.
My oldest tried throwing tantrums. Her pediatrician said just ignore it…walk away. It only escalated. She would throw herself to the floor and, very carefully, bump her head on the floor while screaming at the top of her lungs. One day, after about the fifth time, I walked up to her bent down and rapped her head against the floor (not hard enough to hurt her but hard enough that she noticed). She got this startled look on her face and I told her “Doesn’t feel good does it? Don’t do it again.” She never did.
Hello C&H followers! Can someone help with an info?I follow C&H since 2007 on Gocomics.com. I noticed sometimes for a while there are repetitions. I was told it happens the same way as it happened when C&H went on “real time”: when Waterson had a holiday, they used old strips. Now it is the same again, but this time this repetition is much longer than usually. (I think it is longer than two months already.) Does anyone know how long this repetition season would be? I think the posting of C&H strips couldn’t yet start over, because Waterson did C&H for 11 years, and since 2007 it was only 9 years…Thanks in advance!
Darn, I have a cousin who does exactly that. I did manipulated my parents when I was little, but not through tantrums. They were super rare. It’s wrong to give children everything, since later in life, they won’t learn that not everything will go their way.

If the law is on your side, hammer away on the law. If the facts are on your side, hammer away on the facts. If neither? Hammer away on the table. ;)

Calvin’s Mom doesn’t give a reason for saying “no” this time. She seems to be trying to assert her authority. It backfires.

After so many days of that, I think some times you just have to go with it.

This must be one of the few times you see stuffed Hobbes without anyone else besides Calvin in the frame.

Yelling like that would have earned me a spanking. And I kept up the tradition with my son.

Tantrums don’t happen often with Calvin, but this is one of them.

Why would she even say no? It’s not like having him along hurts anything.

Usually, corporal punishment when administered swiftly is very effective!

Gee, shouting never got me my way. In fact if I shouted, I pretty much earned my one-way ticket to Noville.
