Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for April 11, 2016
Transcript:
Phoebe: For school this week, I have to write a story, using my real life as inspiration. Marigold: Do you remember the story I wrote, based loosely on our adventures? Phoebe: "Daffodil the Unicorn and Her Houseplant"? Marigold: The plant was missing a leaf, like that gap in your teeth!

If the gap were caused by losing a baby tooth, the adult one would have grown in by now. Let us begin speculating what happened to it.

Comic book time. Just as Phoebe never gets older, the adult tooth never comes out.

It’s about her life Marigold, not yours, though I suppose a unicorn always finds a way to be the highlight of the story. Look at the “I” in the second panel. And a gap between teeth is not necessarily a lost tooth. I use to have a gap like that because two grew very far apart.

A gap in one’s teeth also could mean orthodontia in one’s future.

And yet no one has commented on the fact that she made her best friend a houseplant???

Actually, Phobe is different from most comic folks. In Big Nate all the characters go through a ton of summers, but they never leave the sixth grade. In this strip the people wear different outfits each day, and if you pay attention, Phoebe does occasionally go to the next grade.

I wonder that riveting adventure she’ll write about. :)
