When I was young (as in Gracie’s age), I didn’t have Facebook… or even a GoComics account.

TV existed in the 30s but only the rich had it. And very few working stations.

When I was young, we had four, count ’em, four television stations. And you had to get out of your chair to change the channel.

I remember a device that would turn the antenna. You dialed the direction you wanted it to point to and the machine made a clunk clunk noise as it worked. Channel 7 was east, 6 was west etc…..

I grew up with Reading and Radio. My Dad deliberately didn’t buy a television until 1955 or ‘56. By then, thanks to him, my imagination and curiosity had achieved its strong foundation.

I am forever grateful to parents who instilled in me a love of literature and encouraged my creativity and imagination.

I tried to do the same with my children and grandchildren but with all the visual distractions of the internet and social media, it’s not easy.

I remember having only two television stations and the ABC affiliate starting up. TV Guide even made a joke about it: WSIX is channel 8 in Nashville, and WATE is channel 6 in Knoxville.
