I hope the fun Nara has in mind excludes showing her collection of duck-shaped potatoes.

I just noticed that, in profile, Nara looks like Milhouse Van Houten.

Oh good, they live across the street. I was concerned about Madeline’s parenting skills

    Me too, Jacqueline! lol

My son plays with the boys a couple of doors down from us (we live in a condo) and I stand in the hallway to ensure he goes inside without incident.

You guys are crazy. My mom would get me across the busy street (school down the road) and then I and my friends would play on the dead-end road, and to come back I’d stand on the curb and call for her.Check out freerangekids.com and get a grip.

Children are in more danger from people they know than from strangers. At what point do helicopter parents stop following their children around? High school? College? Get a grip, folks.

Third grade…I walked to school every day by myself. That entailed crossing a 4 lane highway and two roads only one road had a crossing guard. Later, when I grew up, I measured the distance. It was about a mile and 1/2. Walked out in front of a car on the 4 lane one time. Poor woman nearly had a heart attack but did stop in time. Me? I looked at her like she had two heads. LOL!

when I was little I used to think I had the freedom to go all over the neighborhood. I suspect the adults peek out to check on us now and then.

When I was a kid my brother and I used to range all over the neighborhood. At night. With our swords. (It was a semi-rural area).

I use to walk across the cow pasture to get to my grandparents house. When my brother started walking, I took him too. I was only 5!

In 3rd grade we moved to a subdivision with only 1 entrance/exit and I was allowed to be anywhere around there. That’s when I learned that singing the old cant about sticks and stones meant the neighborhood bullies would throw rocks at you while you were bike riding. I was not sad when we moved out a year later.

Alice, after having patted herself on the back in panel 1, has to say something reckless in panel 4 to cover the embarrassment of panel 3.But Nara is very polite in addressing “Mrs. Otterloop,” and that’s a Good Thing….

My neighborhood bully stopped on the day I ran out of my garage and shoved a broom stick into the front wheel of his bicycle as he rode by. His father came over to give my step-dad what for; until he saw how big and mean looking my step dad could be. They had a drink together, shook hands and thats the last I heard of the “incident”. (BTW. the street in front of our house was crushed oyster shell, not pavement. The kid was covered in bandaids the next day and refused to look at me! Ha!)
