Deterrence works, but only if both sides are essentially sane; despite the “evil empire” rhetoric, the Soviets weren’t that far off from us. Or maybe we weren’t that far off from them. Either way, we got through almost 50 years of cold war without shooting, at least between the principals; our proxies kind of took it in the shorts. I think the cold war would have gotten pretty hot if it wasn’t for deterrence.
