Nabuquduriuzhur, you’re right about the smoking - and the fact that second hand smoke is done to me rather than by me.
On the other hand, all we have to do is look at the obesity in our country, and the high diabetes rates, especially among children, to know that something we’re eating (along with lack of exercise) isn’t doing us any good.
I remember reading that the study that claimed second hand smoke was bad for people was rigged to get those results. When the study came out it was front page news, but when it came out about it being a bais study, it was buried on second to last page. I grew up in a house where everyone but me smoked. I have be inhaleing 2nd hand smoke for 45 years and according to my doctor, my lungs are great!
Nabuquduriuzhur–I’ve never heard that saturated fats increase cholesterol. I’ve heard that dietary cholesterol increases cholesterol, which seems like a no-brainer to me. Saturated fats cause deposits in your arteries which can cause a thrombus or constriction of blood vessels. Each can lead to heart attacks. That is proven fact. Never heard of hydrogenated fats causing high cholesterol either. The allegation there is that the artificial addition of hydrogen atoms causes hyper-saturated fats that create the same problems of saturated fats on a higher level. Some also say that trans-fats cause cancer, but I have not found any medical studies that sufficiently support that proposition. The assumptions you are making are unfounded, because you are making the wrong assumptions. There is plenty of well-researched literature on the dangers of cholesterol, saturated fats and trans fats.
Nabuquduriuzhur, Thanks for giving us your view of things but please don’t make up statistics and call them facts. Life expectancy at Birth in the US for 1890 was 45.2, and in 1920 it was 54.1. http://web.econ.ohio-state.edu/rsteckel/VITA/2002%20EH.Net%20Encyclopedia—2002.pdf
I agree with you that smoking is one of the worst things that we can do to ourselves but making up statistics makes you sound like a kook and not very believable.
Not so simple, RCMinor. Very few proprietors will exclude a significant number of potential customers, making that “different one” nothing but a fantasy. There are also the employees, frequently young (I live in a college town), who have limited work choices - and are probably preferred hires - who are the victims of the 2ndhand smoke work environment.
By all means, let’s let the government protect us from anything that might harm us. I’m not intelligent enough to make my own decisions. I just hope the government will outlaw the fatty foods and Jagermeister next.
Could u guys cite your info., like wulff92, did? It wld be interesting reading.
I guess people have a right to do with, what they want to with the beautiful, blessed, healthy bodies God gave them. They have to be healthy to be able to handle the smoke for so long. It’s their choice. But, if it affects me or my family, and friends, then it is most likely not good!
No smoking laws have almost killed the bar business in our state. Same for some restaurants. Though, most of them allow smoking outside, and have outside tables and seats. That only works in good weather, tho.
It must be terrible to be soooo addicted to something that controls your life so mch that u wld ask ur family and friends to risk their lives so u cld continue to do it. I had an aunt that kept her lit cigarette in one hand and her oxygen mouthpiece in the other and switched back and forth. We were afraid she wld blow up the house!
I love the old saying that has been around for years; it might even be attributed to Mark Twain or Will Rogers. Two of the most insightful dudes I know. I paraphrase “Don’t argue with an idiot. someone might be confused as to which one is which.”

I read one that claimed secondhand smoke is worse for you than firsthand smoke (true story). So, I took up smoking so I could live longer.

Even Solomon couldn’t figure this one out:
“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.
Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. ”
