Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 12, 2016
Transcript:
Phoebe: Do unicorns know the meaning of life? Marigold: Life is without inherent meaning! We are specks in a cold, meaningless universe, hurting through nothingness on a blue pinprick. Phoebe: Coming from YOU, that's actually much easier to take. Marigold: It is easier to accept insignificance when one also has sparkles.

What, Marigold isn’t going to try using faulty logic to convince Phoebe that the meaning of life is unicorns?

I’ve found that most humans simply won’t accept that life is without inherent meaning. The human race is too narcissistic to accept that, which is one of the reasons religion was invented (to bolster the idea that humans are the reason for the existence of our solar system).

If you compare humanity the the vastness of the cosmos, then we might seem insignificant. But we are significant to each other. The rest of the cosmos might just be an illusion.

There is no god.
Religion is a delusion created my man in response to ignorance and fear.It is a band-aid that people use to cover the fear that when they die, that is the end of them. There is no after-life.
There should be only three “commandments”.
Enjoy the life that you have, here and now.Harm no others as you live your life.Leave something (something good, not just trash) for those that come after you.

Hey, I have something in common with Marigold. Neither of us believe in The Great Cosmic Muffin in the Sky.

I confess I did not expect to go through my morning cartoon break to find Marigold expositing on nihilism. Hopefully, this is a one shot as I like my morning cartoon strips to lift me up and make me laugh.
And, by the bye, regardless of the message Ms. Simpson and others here would like to convey, life does have inherent meaning and value. 99.99% of humans and human civilization have espoused that and I am proudly one of them.
Have a great day. Work hard, play fair, nobody hurt.

Anyone remember the episode of “The Simpsons”, when Maude’s ghost tells Ned “There is no God. It’s just a big, meaningless Void.” Direct quote of the character’s line, so please, don’t bast me. XD Anyway, when I heard that, I thought, “Well, … then, isn’t it up to us to create our own purpose?” Time to open up the Customization options for Life. _

I don’t believe this- is NO ONE going to say what the true meaning of life is? Sigh Guess I’ll have to do it.
The meaning of life is… 42.

Agreed Unicorn.

Here’s a question for you: What’s the meaning of meaning itself? If we have one, why does it matter?

I hope you expected this when you opened up the subject, Dana, even if it is a question an active-minded little one would ask.

Finally! The truth!(Suitably disguised under the auspices of comic patter, of course.)

I believe life has the meaning you want it to have. I’m not sure what Marigold meant to say, but it was very nice of her to make her best friend feel good about life and possibly even herself.

That’s why it is believe. To believe means not knowing anything. If there was evidence then it could be called knowing and not believe.

Some people actually feels better thinking life has no meaning. Think of it as having an open canvas, if there is no meaning, then you can make your own.

Well this just ruined my enjoyment of this strip. Saying this to someone who already suffers from depression and is looking for something lighthearted to brighten his/her day is probably not a great idea. There is a reason that suicide rates have increased in the postmodern era, but that doesn’t matter if we don’t matter.
