It was the early 20th century. Brontosaurus excelsis was reclassified as Apatosaurus excelsis in 1903. And, of course, they were never reclassified as ‘not existing’, just ‘not really distinct from these other guys’.
Ever since the IAU downsized our solar system there has been a huge cry of foul from the masses. After all the mnemonic we learned in school doesn’t work anymore.“My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas” Now we don’t know what we’re being served! But thanks to the observed eccentric orbits of certain Trans-Neptunian Objects known as Sedoids (Sedna was the first TNO observed with this type of eccentric orbit) astronomers Chad Trujillo and Scott S. Sheppard have postulated the existence of “Planet Nine”. An object with 10 times the mass of Earth having an orbital period of ~ 15,000 years.Once it is confirmed by observation we’ll just need a cool name that can be associated with food!

Well…A. excelsis was distinct from A. ajax, it’s just at the time, they weren’t considered distinct enough to warrant being in different genera.

Everyone knows that the Brontosaurus came here in very large spaceships from the Planet Pluto.
