@margueritem, I’m sure the butterfly tattoo swelled up with the rest of the waterlogged body.
In a real detective mystery the tattoo would serve as more than an unreliable way to ID a corpse. I’d guess it signifies membership in a secret society. What if the butterfly represents a mystic form of change and rebirth, and is thetrademark of a group like the one in the old Rock Hudson movie “Seconds”? Pay them enough money and they transform a tired old industrialist into a handsome young man. Pay them not enough and they transform you into a derelict. DT would buy that in an instant.
BillThompson, asks the right question, a ‘MOTIVE’ for what (?) and by who ?
Actually, earlier on August 29 (Panel 2) he had spotted another “motive”
http://www.gocomics.com/dicktracy/2010/08/29/
In fact, then without a shred of evidence he announced then that 3-D had been murdered..
Tracy (and the Author who guides his actions) are slipping into SILLY SEASON again !
Seems Locher is still ‘smarting’ over his forgetfulness in providing a ‘believable’ motive for Anja Nu’s sudden, garish desire to kill Tracy.
“We have a motive at last” he said
The reason why Trey-D is dead
But it’s convoluted at best
And will not stand to the test
Of logic, when it is applied
In fact there’s a hole a mile wide
Getting even was his goal
He vowed this to his very soul
That those who stole would pay
They would indeed rue the day
But the plan must have gone bad
Because he’s the one on the slab
A mariposa azul is all they needed
Other methods were not heeded
To identify the dead body
Methods that at best were shoddy
Was Trey-D’s death a mistake
Just a funny little quirk of fate
Or is it a plot with many layers
Not seen by all the nay-sayers?
Is Locher a master of the art
Or just a bumbling old fart?
What does he have in store
Will it be exciting or a bore?
So come back again tomorrow
To experience either the joy or the sorrow
That comes from reading this strip
Either way it’s bound to be a trip.
Macy doesn’t even have a clue as to who the body belongs to or how it died. The Medical Examiner must be related to Macy, as he hasn’t a clue, either! The only thing positive that he has is a bona-fide hit from “Penny”. He needs to take that and run with it!
I think the strategy now is that, since people don’t read daily newspapers as regularly as they once did, the only goal is to have each day’s strip SEEM as though it’s part of a complex and interesting story.
spacy the macy has been hearing for weeks that 3D had lots of enemies – so he’s just now figuring out that having an enemy just might mean there’ a motive?
This strip is a total insult to readers’ intelligence and the memory of the real dick tracy
It took three weeks to almost ID a dead body with a distinct type of tattoo (and I might add at least a few days to even get the body out of the puddle it apparently drowned in)
We spent at least a week or two Talking to the supposed widow of the body that has yet to be positively identified and after many trips to her mansion from Police HQ (See the sign on top) all we got out of the old girl was that her husband had a secretary whom we should have been talking to in the first place.
Talking to the secretary for a week we finally obtained a list of business associates which reads like an FBI most wanted list and (Gasp) we might have a motive !!!
We might have gotten things done faster if not for those constant annoying calls from the chief that require Tracy to contort and mangle his hands when holding the phone (no one uses a wrist radio anymore/)
Isn’t there some rule that the best time to solve a crime is in the first 48 hours ????
Guess this is why I never am that eager to see this strip at the midnight hour, I’ll wait and let WNDRWTHG tell us what was supposed to be happening later in the day .
What Locher sees as a great mystery story is to display a litlle walking with a lot of talking, puctuated with the odd energy word like “clue” or “motive” to keep a modicum of ‘interest’ alive
In reality, it takes weeks for anything of SUBSTANCE to happen !.
In this foot dragging scenario we need Ringo back to tell us – “It’s Happened !”
You’d think Tracy would start with the painfully obvious. First, figure out how, when and where D’apostrophe vanished. Then question his wife, who has an actual, genuine, no-kidding motive for murder. “Widow of billionaire who stands to inherit his fortune” is a good one.
Of course motive does not establish guilt or innocence. It just helps a detective gauge how much attention he should pay to a suspect. Once he finds some exculpatory evidence, say a videotape of Mrs. D-cubed at a charity ball during the murder’s timeframe, she’s cleared.
But if DT then turns to the newspaper’s society page and reads “Shortly before her death Mrs. D-cubed received a midnight visit from her son, Pruneface, and several of his glamorous friends, during which meeting they discussed D-cubed’s poor table manners. All parties involved decided that the best way to improve D-cubed’s etiquette would be to drown him in Lake Cress Creek.” Then Tracy just might have a motive, as well as a clue.
At this point DT would probably question the paper’s typesetter for having hidden this valuable discovery inside the paper, instead of placing it on the front page.

A motive for what? Has DT deduced that D-cubed murdered himself? Is that how he ended up as an icky mess in the water? A clear case of sewercide!
margueritem about 14 years ago
Exactly, a motive for what? Offing ‘himself’? What about that swell butterfly tattoo?

@OldTracy all the stories lately have been horrible. All people do is stand around and chat. Not much of anything else goes on.

No, and he’s never going to, as Locher will surely forget about that body just like he did the one on stage at the science museum.
