I realized that birds don’t really eat worms. After rain, why are there so many worms slithering uneaten across the driveways and sidewalks, etc? Wouldn’t birds be gobbling them up if birds liked worms?

I think you are right. This would make the old bird saying “save your worms for a rainy day” completely false.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I see Robins eating worms.
