I remember starting school the day after Labor Day, and still getting done the third week of May. But I also remember that we only got Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving (I taught at one school recently that took the whole week off). We didn’t get Columbus Day (just studied about him that day) or MLK Day or Presidents’ Day (though we had special programs for both Lincoln and Washington in February.
We always had (gasp) “Easter” Holidays that were the Friday and Monday around Easter.
But we had no spring break. So I guess the days worked out. We just worked straight through, for the most part, which is why we didn’t have to start school until the “official” end of summer, Labor Day.
I don’t know if I’ve missed a mention of it, but I read this morning that Donna Wold, Charles Schulz’s ex-sweetheart, the little-red-haired girl who was the inspiration for The Little-Red-Haired Girl in the strip, died earlier this month. Sorry I don’t know how to provide a link to an article at the moment.
When I was a kid we either started after Labor Day and got out in June, or started mid/late Aug and got out before Memorial Day. Which is exactly what my kids are doing right now…...But when I was in 3rd grade, we moved from an early start/end district to a late start/end district and even though I left at the semester end, my new school’s semester was for another 1 1/2 weeks. I never quite figured out exactly how my summer was shortened, but I got gyped that year.

Yes, children, there was a time long ago when school didn’t start until September on the Tuesday after Labor Day

In this part of the country some schools started on Aug. 4! (which is ridiculous, IMO)
