Arlo: One night in 1848, ice floes choked off the water above Niagara Falls, nearby residents were awakened by silence!
Janis: What made you think of that?
Lack of sound can be more unsettling than noise.Janis is being silent. What has frozen? What will happen when the ice dam breaks? When will the other shoe drop?
There is a room called an anechoic chamber, which means there is no echo as it absorbs sound. Sound doesn’t bounce off the walls the way it does in a regular room.
It is said that the silence in that room has only been tolerated for 45 minutes.
Only 25% of the waters of Niagara actually fall into it..The rest is sucked off for hydroelectric power….They are talking about releasing the rest of it, someday, to flush the system….
What with cell phones, “music” in stores (I use that term very loosely), car, etc. the average child born today will never experience the sound of silence.
Now you and I don’t talk a lotWe don’t really have toWe spent many years reading each other’s mindsWe don’t bother fightingWe used up the lightningSuch things will happen in time
@DavidHuieGreen“Well, Arlo wasn’t talking either, at first. Sitting in silence can be just fine. Sometimes you’re just not ready to jump into the day.”.Yes, but Arlo’s like me — quiet by nature. Janis is normally more verbose.
Night-Gaunt49 said,@Varnes“It was Tesla’s idea to harness the power of Niagara falls.”.Not really.
Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, Croatia in 1856.
The water falls at Niagara had been used for that since 1759, Daniel Joncairs was the first recorded person to have harnessed a very small portion of the power of Niagara.to power a small sawmill..
In 1805, Augustus & Peter Porter of Buffalo, New York came to Niagara Falls. The Porter’s built a water powered gristmill and tannery along Joncairs’ old ditch.
.By 1881, a small generating station began providing a small amount of electricity to light the village of Niagara Falls and to provide power to several of the mills. .The Niagara Falls Power Company offered a $100,000 prize for anyone who could develop a method to transmit electricity long distance. .
Tesla created an effective alternating current (AC) transmission system that would do the trick with George Westinghouse.
.And sometimes wives mumble or say it knowing background noise or distance will make it unintelligible.
.Once Patsy was mad at me for a few years and I couldn’t get her to say why.I finally pieced together that she had misunderstood something and clung to her misunderstanding.

Delete “Niagara Falls” from Arlo’s text; insert “Janis Day.”

Maybe she just misses her “kids”. That keeps a lot of middle aged women quiet….

Husbands traditionally don’t listen anyhow — so… why bother?
