I thought Hobbes was Calvin’s pillow. Or is that the other way around?

If I were Dad I’d be sneaking up the steps to see who Calvin was talking to.

Just sleep on his belly Calvin. I doubt it will feel that different from your own bed.

I wonder if Dad only hears Calvin or whether he also hears what he assumes in Calvin speaking in a different voice.

calvin, you’d better quit horsing around at bedtime. school is starting SOON. sleep deprivation is not conducive to learning. though I doubt that means much to you.

I’m reminded of the great (but now totally disgraced) Bill Cosby’s standup routine where he and his brother argue in bed after lights-out. Hilarious. Kids (and stuffed tigers) are so full of life that they just can’t “settle down!”

By this time Dad knows Calvin talks to, and argues with, what he sees as a stuffed tiger. He knows his son. I think Dad believes Hobbes is the more mature parts of Calvin that he hopes will eventually take over.:Dad would be wrong about this, according to Watterson. Calvin perceives Hobbes as a real talking tiger, everyone else perceives him as a stuffed tiger. Watterson portrays both views of reality as equally true. Hobbes is an entity unto himself that can perform independent actions, but only Calvin can perceive it. It would be extremely creepy if Hobbes understood that no one but Calvin thinks he is alive, but he doesn’t.

Hobbes, you better be quiet. Otherwise you’ll get a few lumps on your head!
