Janis: You said you were cheated!
Arlo: You said the x-ray glasses didn't work!
Arlo: Well, I was only ten years old!
Arlo: I didn't know what to look for!
plus, 10-year-olds don’t really have all that much to admire if you’re 10 yourself.Decades later, much has changed. But now our Janis admirer will make some appreciative comment and his non-admirers will castigate him.Rinse and repeat.
The Garry Moore show was sponsored by Winston, and he had to have a lit cigarette in the commercials. He didn’t smoke – hated the habit! – so he never actually put the cigarette into his mouth.
I remember the story of a group in the 60s that wanted to ban smoking. They named themselves the “League to Save Mankind From Tobacco.” Then someone noted the initials.
Dr McCoyJoe Camel was a dromedary. Bactrians have two humps. Llamas, alpacas, vicuñuas, and guanacos have no humps. Now, aren’t you sorry you brought it up?
Once while Jack Benny was sponsored by Lucky Strike, he guest stared on Burns and Allen, planning forvJack and George to do a concert together and arguing about whose sponsor (B&A’s was Maxwell House coffee); announcer Bill Goodwin or Harry Von Zell got into the converrsation with, “In this case ‘LSMFT’ will mean ’Let’s sample Maxwell’s fine taste.’”
A kid’s window-painting contest someplace, focusing on health messages, was won by Joe Chemo, a patchy-haired camel with half a dozen IV tubes running into him.
When I was a child, I would buy my dad a carton of cigarettes for Christmas. Anybody could purchase them in those days and Dad died long ago of emphysema. No, I never smoked.
