Root beer was originally made from sassafras root or from sarsaparilla root. Now it is artificially colored and flavored.

Speaking of things that are fun to say, I wonder if he got it from an Afghanistan Banana stand.

My first job was for Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor & we had sassafras sodas. It is like a strong root beer flavor with a hint of ginger. It is very good.

Sassafras is that filé stuff you sprinkle over Gumbo.

If you force feed Sassafras to rats in staggering quantities over an enormous period of time, there is a slight, tiny, itty bitty chance the rats may possibly develop cancer.

Well, at least according to the US FDA…

Funny my best friend is originally from Indiana, where as a child she would frequently chew on sassafras root. She loved it, but you can’t find it anywhere else I guess. She found out that recently the FDA has found it to be a carcinogen so it is no longer sold anywhere in the US. She did bring back some sassafras candy, which was quite good. You can read more about it on Wikipedia if you like.

The scary thing is that I think the FDA does not allow you to sell the unaltered sassafras root.. Apparently one of the naturally occurring chemicals can be manipulated by a knowledgeable chem lab to produce an illegal drug. The problem is that the plant grow as an invasive bush and tree in a lot of rural areas.
