Caulfield: Maybe you could explain something to me, Frazz.
Frazz: Sure.
Caulfield: Grumpy guy across the street who complains about mowing his lawn yet waters it obsessively...
Frazz: I can't help you.
As designated yard boy, I tend to the weeds that are my lawn. But unless they are brown and dying, they get no water from me. And I don’t mind cutting them.
I planted clover in the kitty/dog yard – lush and tall, never needs mowing, and it is nice and cool for them on these hot summer days. At a previous home my front “lawn” was also clover, and it made for very interesting croquet matches.
Bigpuma…. normally I agree with a lot of things you say (even though I may not feel them to the same harshness level you seem to have), but today, I think your postulate seems a bit off in the following way:You seem think that the grumpy neighbor had to “engage” Caulfield in discussion for Caulfield to get this information…. and for this you calle Jef a “j*ck*ss”.I see today’s comic much differently…. namely…. most folks who are bordering on “obsession” about any topic (be it lawn care, running, swimming, comics, etc) often will talk and complain quite vocally for anyone within earshot to hear them and their complaint. I can easily envision the neighbor fellow who is rather intense about his lawn griping about mowing, griping about general upkeep, and just in general fussing about the lawn, because it is “his thing” that he is interested in and is close to obsessing about. With that idea in mind, I think it is actually funny, Caulfield’s observation that the fellow’s complaint about cutting the lawn is contradicted by his constantly watering it to make it grow. Honestly, I do think many of your comments have merit (but again, I tend to feel them much less strongly than you do)…. but your comment does seem a bit off today to me.
Yes, sometimes Caulfield can be TOO much. He is at times, what I would call “mean spirited” to several of his teachers. So, I could see him saying what you suggest to the neighbor. But, fortunately, MOST of the time, Caulfield is relatively “ok”…. only occasionally is he mean spirited.
Reminds me of a girl I knew once who grew her hair past her waist but would complain about how long it would take to wash it. Never understood that one.
Some people just like complaining because they are never happy. My mother-in-law was like that — whatever she had now was no good and whatever she had had in the past was perfect.
