Pardon, but you can still buy a wind-up watch on Amazon, and a couple of years ago I know you could buy one at Target or WalMart, so you probably still can.
They sell them at sporting goods stores, for camping and travel…and even at fine jewelry stores…you can buy one for 10 bucks or spend a thousand.Timex quit making them (I think) but Fossil makes some. and I think Seiko still does too.
They’re not as plentiful as quartz, and the cheap ones tend to be made in the far East.
But they haven’t disappeared. Most of us just stopped looking for one.
I still like to be able to glance at my wrist to check the time. I don’t always have my phone in arm’s reach and then you still have to turn the screen on.
Let me guess: HmmmmAs with many products these days, the watches might have been much cheaper in early days. Look at Harry’s Razor. I own several razors I used from the 30’s through the 70’s, and none cost over $2.Frazz might have bought his Shinola watches during his high times as a song writer/performer. Memories of a glorious past.He might have received them as gifts.Jef might be plugging a local company, too. Not a bad thing.
I gladly gave up watches once my phone became a portable time keeping device. Got tired of having to constantly clean the bands (sweat is nasty stuff and I’m an active guy who does a fair bit of sweating).
For the confused youngsters: This strip is a callback to an old George Carlin routine where he combined the two commonly used phrases that meant “confused” – “He don’t know S&^% from Shinola” and “I don’t know whether to S&^% or wind my watch” into “I guess I’ll S&^% on my watch!”
I am one of those older people used to wearing a wrist watch and so is my hubby. He had left his watch off because the band needed repair. One of our friends asked what time it was, he automatically glanced at his (bare) wrist, paused a beat and said, “It’s…two hairs past a freckle!”
How we know that Frazz really does own an watch?, maybe its an Rolex, maybe he just doesnt wear it on an job that requires to reach into an toilet or clean up vomit

I don’t think you can get a basic, inexpensive, analog watch these days.

Is it possible Frazz can’t tell a watch from Shinola? He does have a certain amount of tunnel vision. Intellectually, that is.

Seiko and Citizen still offer non-electric watches. Most are divers style. You can even buy them at Macy’s.

My youngest son’s most prized possession is a watch linked to the atomic clock.
There are kids still out there who adore watches, but they need to be the right watch for them.

I think I first wore a watch in 2nd or 3rd grade. A Timex boys watch that I got for my birthday.

Timex Ironman is the best watch ever. I’ve had two expensive watches in my life and both were huge disappointments.
