Are you striving for anti-Semitism? That’s standard fare, and it’s galling.

I think this is not particularly anti-Jewish humor in the US – we think of “Rothschild” as a synonym for fabulous European wealth, without the crazy “Jews control the world” myths. Could have been anti-Jewish if there had been a reference to Wall Street or Hollywood.

Separating money from wealth, establishing a monetary system tied to nothing, is essential in separating the labor that creates wealth from the money representing that labor.

okay, some do, some don’t, yet I immediately recognized the potential for anti-semitism in the reply. Could we collectively determine a better family name to use?

Definitely ant-Semitic. Those who deny it are ignorant of history and doom us to repeating it. Words have consequences. Claiming it is only political correctness is a straw man to attempt to avoid dealing with those consequences.

Had this been in almost any other comic, I would not have considered it anti-Semetic (anti-Jewish.) But with Hart’s history of anti-Semetism, which includes the Arabs as well as Jews, I, too, must label this strip as anti-Jewish.I don’t know the religious insanity of the Mastrionis, who are relatives, but I will stop reading again. I stopped reading when Hart’s religious bigotry began after his “born again-ism”.The great banking families of Europe became bankers because the Xian Church forbade the drawing of interest on monies loaned. So the Christians, always out to make a buck, gave their money to the Jewish moneylenders to loan out for them. The church said that Jews were going to hell anyway, so let them draw interest. Because of their honesty, integrity and hard work, plus fear of the Church, allowed the banking families to become wealthy. As almost all professions were denied the Jews of Europe, banking and money lending was about the only way out of the grinding poverty of the ghetto.

I will admit feeling a tad uncomfortable with the Rothschild reference, but that is MY problem.

But the banks are made of marble, with a guard at every door. And the vaults are stuffed with silver that we all sweated for.

Anti-Semitic for sure. The Rothschild’s are the anti-Semites’ poster children for Jews who got rich by means other than physical labor and were condemned by all but their patrons.

If you are Jewish and not offended, then you don’t know the history. Do the research. Lack of knowledge is how history repeats itself. While you are at it, read the poem by Pastor Martin Niemöller. You need to educate yourself and get over your lack of reality.

Wow, we Jews certainly get it, going and coming. First, the Good Christians force the Jews into banking, then they claim that bankers dont work hard for their money, in order to attack Jews….Typical. Just another example of how we Jews, servants to Gd and to all His creation, suffer, thus making us, again, the Suffering Servant of Gd…!

Jesus Christ, some people need to actually read some current events before jumping to conclusions. It has nothing to do with Jews. Those banks are the basis for all the austerity measures that have decimated Europe since the banks almost destroyed the world economy. They’re universally reviled there for that very reason, and by the way, they also include the IMF in that group. It’s a term defining banks, not a person or religion. Use Google before declaring something offensive.

The bizarre right wing extremist CONspiracy theory about a “One World Government” run by Rothschilds (European Jews) and the Rockefeller family was cooked up in the 1950’s by Fred Koch, wealthy owner of an energy company and a co-founder and chief financial supporter of the right-wing wacko John Birch Society..Koch had been beaten in competition by the Rockefellers so he demonized them, and built his business largely by selling to Hitler’s Third Reich, where he picked up the theories about evil Jewish bankers, who he also demonized, creating the improbable linkage between European Jewish bankers and a non-Jewish energy dynasty that he had been unable to beat in the free markets to which he gave lip serivce..Today Fred Koch’s vile, toxic legacy of bigotry lives on through his sons, the Koch Brothers (Charles and David) who continue to fund extremist right wing CONspiracy theories.

(By the way, we have found many ways to make money without hard labor.Use animals for workers.Use wind, water, sunlight to provide energy for production.Produce things others would like to have enough to pay for them: comics, stories, songs, message delivery, art, loans, protection. sex, booze and other drugs, movies, plays, transportation, medical care, card games, education,…These require some labor but not necessarily hard labor.Given advances in robotics, it is easy to envision nearly all production of goods and services with no human labor required.)

If you are Jewish and you don’t see this as anti-Semitic in any way at all, I have to wonder if you are Jewish only on paper or something.

Or perhaps you are the kind of Bernie Sanders Jew who gets outraged only when the target is an ‘official’ minority person for whom any reference other than great praise is considered an insult, and has no real Jewish sensibility.

Apparently you have no sense of Judaism or history and of how typical this kind reference is.

Hopefully you are not the kind of person who would dismiss this, but for example would agree with lowlifes lie Jimmy Carter who have helped set up the dynamic that criticism of Obama is intrinsically racist.

I am rather disturbed to read this comic. Rothschild is an historically Jewish name, and one which is closely tied to a belief that they, as bankers, have controlled significant world events. This may seem like a casual joke to you, but it ties into a long history of anti-Semitic accusations. The only thing more disturbing than the comic itself is how some of the commenters are trying to deny that the name has any connection to Jewish identity at all.

I like this idea. It could possibly lead to stories better than this one (I found the last panel too vague and vulnerable to different interpretations).
