Alice: My dad gave me a ride to preschool today. Beni: Did he talk funny and sing like you say he does? Alice: Yes. He did his yodeling duck impression. the. whole. way. Dad: Wuck wuck wuck wuck. Alice: The yodeling duck was funny when I was three. Beni: My dad yells helpful encouragement to others in traffic. I'm not allowed in the car with him till I'm 18.

I like Beni’s “helpful encouragement” euphemism. I think the first time my parents ever heard me use helpful encouragement was when I was driving/sliding them down a very slippery winter hill in Cincinnati (where I was then in grad school) and somebody ahead almost wouldn’t move al all….

Yes I catch myself offering helpful encouragement while driving. Sometimes I check in and hear myself, laugh and ask myself aloud “Where is the love?” Changes the whole day.
