Once had a boss that was great guy to hang with for a drink after work! He had to get after me one day at work which I very much deserved and when I was at the bar that afternoon with the guys he came in looked at us then sat at the bar. I walked over ans asked why he didn’t come sit with us and he said " I didn’t think you would want me to after this morning" I told him hey that was over there at work this is over here for fun come sit with us!" He was great boss he passed away about a year later from cancer RIP Butch!
The boss/friendship thing is a very precarious relationship. I’ve seen a boss and my coworker become close friends but when their friendship dissolved it was only a matter of time before my coworker got the boot.
I’ve also seen boss/friendships help each other’s careers. Both pulling the other up as they climbed the corporate ladder.
So it’s a risky move to befriend your boss. It’ll either make you or break you in the end.
I have seen similar and even worse issues. My brother’s boss got fired for misconduct and that reputation spread to my brother due to his friendship with the boss. My brother immediately started looking for another job. He quit a month later and it was clear that the new boss was glad to see him leave.
