My cousin tells me of a story about how the game wardens in Virginia have a decoy deer. It even has a mechanical tail that it flicks. Poachers have been known to take multiple shots at it. Now, I’m a city boy but even I know that there are only two outcomes to this event with a real deer: you hit it and it falls down or you miss it and it runs away. Standing there to be shot at time after time is not an option.
We used to have a horse that would get shot at several times every fall. We finally had to send her to another farm during hunting season. The day somebody shot at me was the day Hubby called DNR!
Responded to cases of cows, horses, sheep, and people being shot. Ultimate may have been a “Hunter” who shot and FIELD DRESSED a burro, with a brand and steel shoes! Couldn’t Bellevue it at first when saw it hanging from a tree.
I grew up in South Texas, and hunted deer (whitetail) with my dad as a kid. In my early 20’s, we travelled to Pennsylvania to hunt with his brother, who always bragged about the deer season in PA. We stopped for breakfast at a cafe on our first morning, and I overheard another hunter there talking about the “sound shots” he’d gotten the day before. According to my uncle, that’s when you hear something crashing through the woods and shoot in that direction. Dad and I went back to the
Western Mule deer are a lot bigger than their white-tail cousins. PFEI; down in Arizona some New Yorkers wanted to hunt a friend’s private, he said okay, and that we were going out to do some “sound shots”; they left.

Son and I have two of ‘em hanging, from my pasture. Their disguises didn’t fool us!

Everyone knows that you get more meat from a white faced deer than you do from the white tailed kind.
