I could accomplish the same thing simply by wearing yellow. Because I have brown hair & eyes my mother would always like to have me wear yellow – particularly mustard – echhhh – and every time I did the teacher would send me to the nurse’s office because I looked so sick. No other color does it to me like that. I don’t know why my mother never noticed.
Jo Clear, I too remember turning that black knob grinding the pumice stone in to rough sand to wash hands. Remember the half moon shaped sink with the floor mounted foot pedal to activate the water. Ahh; jungle gym over concrete, bomb drills and pumice soap. Those were the days.

I still can hear the air raid sirens going off and remember the duck and cover drills. ( I never understood what good it would do to hide under our desks ).

Lining up in single file and grade by grade, exiting the building, then standing in line outside, in the fresh air, until the all clear bell rang, was always more enjoyable than an arithmetic test in a stuffy classroom..
Ah, Linguist, your memories are much like mine. I do remember once lining up by class and marching out onto the playground grass and one of the girls running at full speed back to the asphalt because she was severely allergic to grass and the teacher had forgotten.
Civil defense is widely practiced in Switzerland, with businesses and hotels being required to have shelters in case of natural or manmade disasters. Rifles are kept in every residence. Swiss men do a term of military service, and Swiss women are required to learn civil defense preparedness. Switzerland did not earn a reputation for preparedness and 500 years of peace by sitting around singing kumbaya!
