I still can hear the air raid sirens going off and remember the duck and cover drills. ( I never understood what good it would do to hide under our desks ).

That loud Blaaat, Blaaat, Blaaat sound of the fire alarm going off was usually a welcome one – especially if it was in the middle of a test !

Lining up in single file and grade by grade, exiting the building, then standing in line outside, in the fresh air, until the all clear bell rang, was always more enjoyable than an arithmetic test in a stuffy classroom..
