Phoebe: That gourd is pretty elegant. I dunno if its as elegant as you, though.
Marigold: However, I think you may be nearly as elegant as this pumpkin!
It would be interesting if Florence came as a “Trick or Treat-er” on the appointed eve and saw the elegant gourd (which she might perceive as a slight against her appearance, perhaps suggested by her more elegant sister…).
What confuses me about the idea of jack o lanterns is that they’re supposed to scare away evil spirits. But evil spirits would probably see scarier things than that all the time, but good spirits wouldn’t be as used to it. So they would really be a bad luck charm. Same goes for gargoyles.
I carve a turnip most years. It’s difficult to do but you do get lots of carved-out turnip already shredded and ready to cook, and the effect is good – a hollow turnip with a candle in it is very pale and waxy and translucent. The hard part is trying to end up with a thin but intact outer shell of turnip, without sticking your knife or scoop right through it.
For God’s sakes, please do not put lit candles outside. Not only can you set the leaves on fire, you can set the kids on fire, too. Their outfits are usually highly flammable.

Nice touch with the candle. Now perhaps I should carve pumpings of my cousins.

Imagine carving turnips instead since that was what was used before pumpkins.

I like the Phoebe eyes and cute little nose on the pumpkin, but as I recall she has only one tooth missing. Upper left I think.

Need to substitute a sparkler for the horn, though.

Even Marigold’s misplaced compliments are charming.
