Why are these two yokels and Ms. Melba the only characters in this strip who never age? They should have both died by 1966. Uncle Walt should make the big exit too. He ages but never dies. He’s supposed to be a WWI vet, but the last one, a British woman named Florence Green, died in 2012 at 110. My guess is they’re too much a part of the comic to croak.
I have still been working through my aggravation at Rufus for his generally poor treatment of his friend, our hero, Joel. And now Ms. Melba is also being unkind to the genial and gentle, professorial Joel too.
.
I am glad that Joel is of a disposition that allows him to roll with the punches, for he has sure been on the receiving end of a helluva lot of unkind and unfriendly interactions from others of late.
.
That he retains his dignity, calm demeanor, and congenial personality through all of this is a testament to his own character. He deserves better…. and also deserves a bit of new burley leaf for his pipe and a few nips from the jug.
.
I was happy to see that the jug had been replaced in the panels from a few days ago. That is a relief. Notice how it was kept on Joel’s side of the cart this time… away from Rufus. Although Rufus is showing a modicum of effort at being a friend again, I still feel riled up at him.

I think Walt must be after Jean Calment’s record of 122 years. If so, we should get another 6 years of so out of him.
