Dean: So the three main parts of an atom are: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are in the nucleus- Heart: This is ridiculous! Heart: I'm never going to remember all this! And why do I have to learn it?! I'm not going to be a scientist! Dean: But what if a meteor strikes Earth and society collapses?! Don't you want to be prepared with knowledge? Heart: I'll take my chances.

Knowing about atoms isn’t going to save anybody in that case, Dean. Better to learn how to hunt and build shelter and a fire in the wild.

You can bet that in things that she likes, like dolls she can and does recall far more complicated things than electrons, protons and neutrons which are the basics of bosonic matter. Wait till she gets to antimatter like positrons and dark matter like neutralinos. And we haven’t gotten to the six types of quarks yet.

Job prospects aside, a huge advantage of being scientifically literate is that it enables one to see more easily through the nonsense of creationists, anti-vaxxers, global warming denialists, and various conspiracy crazies.
