Actually have seen that happen lots of times. They want to cut back on calories so they start drinking diet soda, and they get use to that taste. So when they drop off of the diet they still want that same taste for the drink.
I love seeing people do that. Or the opposite. Someone will only order a small salad then have their Pepsi/Coke refilled about half a dozen times throughout the course of the meal. Then they reject dessert because, “I’m trying to watch my weight”.
One of the major causes for obesity and diabetes here, is their predilection to eating large amounts of pasteles y tortas ( pastries & cakes ) and consuming prodigious quantities of gaseosas ( sodas ).
.
Interesting… when you use the Spanish word for soda pop gaseosa rather than refresco , even a diet soda – gaseosa de dieta doesn’t sound so appealing.
I don’t know whether you can find drinks sweetened with stevia in the States but it is a great ‘natural’ sweetener that replaces sugar. You can buy it in packet form under various brand names. My wife uses packets of SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener in place of sugar. She can’t take and/or doesn’t like the taste of Saccharine or Aspartame products.I also make my own from fresh stevia leaves ( purchased in the spice area of my local supermarket ) and keep some of the concentrate in the fridge to use.in drinks or cooking ( It has a fridge shelf life of about 30 days )

I remember years ago seeing a ‘stout’ woman at Costco one day that had a shopping cart with nothing but Slimfast and Regular Pepsi!

I’ve seen this, too. A donut in one hand and looking for the diet sweetener for their coffee.
Good thing we all know how to eat properly!

Practically every patient I talk to says they eat healthy; this includes people that are 100 lb overweight.

Put me in the class of people who find non-diet sodas too sweet.
