Mark: I hear you guys are opening a restaurant!
Mary Lou: Well, we do prepare lunch every day...
Mary Lou: And we serve it to people...who come here to eat...
Mary Lou: But I wouldn't exactly call it a restaurant.
Why is there a government man in our poor comic strip??? Jimmy J where are you going with this arc? Last week all was bucolic and idyllic. Now it’s all metro & urban sprawl.
I managed restaurants for 17 years. The Health Dept. bureaucracy is incredible. Kansas H.D. would hit up our farmers’ markets, & if someone was preparing food, they had to have a license proving that their home kitchen was inspected. Many times a person cooking from home had to have separate major appliances, a separate room in the home, etc.. The Amish & Mennonites stopped coming. Their foods were so good, too! Good luck, kids, with this. Reality sucks.
Health inspections on a regular basis are absolutely necessary. They save thousands of people from sickness and death every year. There are some beneficial government programs.
Government bureaucracy and over-regulation are what is killing small businesses! That and obamacare, which will soon be toast after President Trump is in office!
I find it surprising that MaryLou and Gene are both seemingly trying to skirt the laws that both should be pretty darn well aware of from all the years they both worked at her Dad’s (Gus’) restaurant.
.
Food safety laws are important for the community good. I do, suggest, however, that for small start-ups… that there should be a lower priced fee for the forms, inspections, permits, etc needed for compliance.
I’m on the industrial side of the food business. Health inspection part of the business. Inspectors can be helpful and informative. Some are neither. Some are downright mean. For those mean ones you can file a complaint and request another inspector. Mary Lou and Gene may be in a bit of trouble. If you’ve been flying under the radar and get caught, not good.
jilectan, said, “It is so reassuring to have a government entity ensuring our health, since we know the government is only there to help us. Do you have a moment to discuss purchase of water front property.” ..…Sounds to me like you voted for somebody that you would love to have break the food health laws and spread disease…….Is that what republicanism has sunk to now?
…Man, there was a time when some republicans were the good guys, Americans with something positive to bring….Seems like republicans are just criticizing and running down the country out of meanness, now…Uneducated, small town, small minded bigots thrashing around at flies at best…Why do republicans criticize this country so? Why are they siding with the Russians now all of a sudden?? Is Trump going to allow them to take over our country? Looks like it to me….Republicans show no signs our country or it’s people either, for some crazy reason….After this presidency, George W. Bush is going to look like Winston Churchill…..The country will be bankrupt, as his companies and investments always are…And we will all be speaking constant words of hate at each other..There will be no check on ethnic intimidation, bullying or other personal crimes…. it’s all good…
“When you say words no longer mean squat, maybe that’s why some people heard all the words about Hillary, and by her, and yet went out and voted for her”
.
Few actually voted for either, rather against t’other.
Some of us voted against both — enough that could have given the election to either had we considered acceptable the candidate.
(And they said our votes didn’t count.)
.
That does not mean the rank and fie governmental employee is as corrupt as they who would be our rulers.
“Man, there was a time when some republicans were the good guys, Americans with something positive to bring”
.
So you think all Republicans are negative factors?
That every last one of them is deplorable?
.
“Seems like republicans are just criticizing and running down the country out of meanness, now”
.
As you criticize all Republicans?
Kindred spirits?
.
“Uneducated, small town, small minded bigots thrashing around at flies at best”
.
You seem filled with prejudice when you paint all with the insults.
Some don’t live in small towns.
People who DO live in small towns are not sub-humans and many did not vote for President-elect Trump.
Their reasons for rejecting Hillary Clinton need not be prejudice even though that seems to be YOUR prejudiced thinking. (She is not a good person from what I have observed.)
.
“Why do republicans criticize this country so?”
.
They tend to love the country but dislike and distrust its leaders. Very likely they will soon turn on Trump as he lets them down.
Not worshipping specific leaders is not hating our country.
.
Brad is an example of what is good about our country — people laying their lives on the line to protect others.
He symbolizes millions of real people who do it daily.
Yes, but he left it and formed his own party, which came in second to Democrats when Republicans were third (except in Arizona where the Socialists also beat them.)

She grew up in a restaurant,
was pretty much running it by the time her father was ready to sell it….
And doesn’t know food establishments need permits, licenses, and health inspections to be open to the public??
And a liquor license if they serve beer on those music nights.
Just a bit disingenuous, Mary Lou!

Everyone who responded to my question yesterday was right. No gag was in the strip.
Today, the other shoe dropped, and the hammer is about to follow.

Because food poisoning and strep throat is so much better than inspection of the preparation and distribution of food.

BTW, the original food and drug act was introduced by a Republican President.

Still sounds to me like a 50 under the table would cure the problem.

It’s easier to get a food truck or food trailer inspected than a restaurant. Just an idea for MaryLu and Gene.

Here in Colorado we have the Cottage Food Act which exempts some home prepared food products, but not the hot food that Janice is serving.

Hate the regulations, but hate the lawsuit for medical costs associated to food-borne illness, even if it wasn’t your food that made them ill MORE.

If she charges for the food it is a restaurant. I’m very glad for health inspections in the places I eat.

Col Sanders started out owning a service station and serving chicken in his living quarters to customers.
