Happy 115th, Walter Elias. (Imagine Japanese schools having 5 January off for that’s the birthday of Studio Ghibli founder Miyazaki Hayao.)

Mark must really love Disney. He celebrated his birthday both here and in Liō.

In just ten days, we can celebrate the 50th anniversary of his death. I remember that as a kid. Seems forever ago.

Steamboat Willie was not the first talking cartoon—there were two others before it. Also, there were a number of feature-length animated films made before Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The only one that can still be seen is Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926). Snow White was the first cel-animated feature film, though.

The Fleischer Brothers cartoon, My Old Kentucky Home, predates Steamboat Willie as the first talkie by 2 years.

My school had a holiday today — snow day! Almost makes me wish I wasn’t retired! (uproarious laughter!)

Disney was losing money fast with movie money down and the parks not keeping their end up. They were the target of a hostile takeover so they had to change the type of films they did.
