Marcy: Take a look at the spreadsheet joe!
Joe: Do I have to?
Math was never my strong suit.
Marcy: We're still paying for christmas 2015!
Joe: I blame my folks for never hiring a tutor!
See, this is a bad thing. Why go into debt? Establish the holiday as a “family focus” event that will lead up to the big day. Families can do little things that are not costly, but add to theis family is in Philly, take the kids walking to all the city sites that are lit up, then stop and get the kids hot cocoa. Have a xmas sing-a-long in the car on the way home. Joe’s a cop, get a list of shelters doing meals for the homeless n have the kids pitch-in. After doing this as a “family”, treat the kids to something inexpensive. Set up all the fav xmas movies, eggnog and goodies nite. Drive the family to Delaware’s Longacre Gardens (45 mins away) and watch the xmas scenes, stop at a family resturant in DE for deserts.
By doing the family time, the kids will appreciate how special the holidays are compared to the rest of the year and not be consumed with $$$ as you explain and show them it is not gifts, but “family” that makes the holidays special. Do stocking stuffers, with a minimum of two gifts and a big big dinner for xmas. They have 4 kids and multiple relatives so the kids will receive gifts from family as well.
In our family, those who have kids understand that the rule is “gifts for kids only” this way u only have to pick something up for your parents and the in-laws…..something affordable.

If you can’t afford to pay the credit card bill off in full each month, your spending way too much.
