I kept All Quiet on the Western Front checked out and overdue from 1969 through 1974, I think.Probably not my proudest accomplishment, but better than some.
Checked out from reality and Lost in his own thoughts, Ferrins did not notice Altwin returning until he was standing next to him at the window, delicately clearing his throat. With him came a pair of Sannico regulars, who had gone with him to examine the ship and determine its state, one manning oars with Altwin and the other the tiller as they went out to see what they could see.
They smelled of sweat and fish and the docks, shocking Ferrins out of his reveries, surprised that he could have missed that when they came in. Quickly slapping a strong and stern look of unquestionable authority over his moue, he turned to them to hear what intelligence they might have gathered.
“We have checked it out, Primary,” said Altwin, “and it is neither a plague ship nor a war ship, and not a pirate ship. It is the Grimsmus Ship, as in the legends, or so says her captain and sole occupant. And Grimsmus is the name on her hull as well. I suggest we head inland, and quickly, just to be on the safe side of things. Things of legend are not to be trifled with.”

More importantly, the books in question were sold for a dollar a piece at your estate sale, by your family, rather than being returned to the library.
It is their way of saying how much they love you.

Your father who shares your name originally checked them out. Now they’re family heirlooms.
Their value? A debt of as much as $96,059.

Run, run, as fast as you can; you can’t catch me, I’m a book-reading man!
(And I’m not saying when I was born; only that I remember check-out cards in library books….)
