She’s right about the eucalyptus trees being non-native. There was a boom back in the day where a lot of folks thought they could make a lot of money planting eucalyptus because they are very fast growing and could be used as railroad ties. Turned out the wood was not right for the ties, and they all went bust. James Irvine bought all those parcels of trees for pennies on the dollar, and that’s where the Irvine Ranch in Orange County came from.

So you’ve never read a book. I think that’s something most of us have just assumed all along. Nice to have it confirmed.

Speaking of non-native trees, I continue to be amused by the Fox “News” coverage of the Wisconsin Uprising of 2011, mostly conducted in the February snows surrounding the state capitol, but depicted on that “fair and balanced” channel with videos showing palm trees in the background.

This looks like the central coast hills of California, in fact it looks like the view from my house- including the non-native (but have been here for more generations than my family) eucalyptus

The oils in eucalyptus helped the trees burn at 2000F during the Oakland Hills fire that killed two dozen people and wiped out many many homes. Not only did they get planted in the 1800s for wood that proved to be utterly unusable for anything (noting Jan’s comment above) but getting rid of a single stump takes years of close attention. I cut down a line of them several years ago that had sprouted from a single runner and constantly have to fight sprouts, dozens at a time in the spring but they keep coming even in winter that are trying to regrow from the roots. The host trees are long gone. Where’s a termite when you need one. Eucalyptus are terrible trees. Plant something native that actually supports the wildlife.

I then educated myself and moved up the promotional ladder, Became a supervisor, New hires trainer, and made it all the way to Maintenance Manager, And those were the most satisfying 22 and most productive years of “This Is My Life” series, now, Happily retired and watching the world turn - – - – - -By the way I raised my two sons all the way to college graduates with the paychecks earned as a “Custodian”- – - – - -Not too shabby for “A custodian” I say!!!

Some custodians and people in similar jobs choose them simply because they don’t want a more stressful job.
