I recall the first time Mr Staton drew the Spirit.

It was for the Spirit Jam.

James Garner would have made an excellent Spirit and Lee J. Cobb a perfect Commissioner Dolan

We would do much better if all drugs were medical matters, not law enforcement.

I have a feeling that was the reason for the convergence of people of various persuasions in Tracy’s town. Perenelle now has two persons securing the formula – Tracy and Spirit.

    .

What if the undesirables win the auction, will Tracy and Spirit allow them to take the formula? I have a feeling that there is a problem there.

Hmmm, UNODC. Very interesting! So, it does seem that the theme of this tale is everlasting life.

Might have cast Michael Callan in his younger days, but he’s one of those underappreciated actors I’d tend to cast in pretty much anything …

Wonder if Will Eisner had any leading man from the era in mind when he created The Spirit.

    Here comes a thought …

    .

Is there any chance that “Perenelle” might not be all that she seems?

    .

Could she be someone else in disguise …?!

Hmm, in that case she might fall afoul of the real Mrs. Flamel—who we have testimony of from Mr. Am.

That eye patch must be significant in some way. There was nothing that I remember about the historical Perenelle losing an eye.

The Christian faith teaches that Life Everlasting is in fact real, not a “fairy tale” – but it comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not a secret formula purchased in some shadowy back alley.

Some Moon people live to be over 1000. Moon Maid once told Junior that the oldest person on the moon lived to 1300 years.

Ms. Flammel is certainly intriguing. Immortality formula? I’m skeptical . . . but the Great Am said he is “sure” she is “truly immortal.” Hmm. What’s going on with her??

The concept of true immortality isn’t against the laws of nature. Many animals exhibit extremely long lifespans — possibly bordering on immortally.

A true immortal, or one with an extremely long lifespan would probably do what ever it’d take to minimize or eliminate any records of being seen past the 100 or so years a normal human would live. Until the age of photography, then they would probably go completely underground.

Today if such person existed many would just dismiss this as photoshopping, or not that person but a descendant, or just plain crazy.

Now would anyone wish to join me, in my little blue box? Not the one showing up on stain-glass windows on churches dating back to medieval times ;)

@Night-Gaunt49> Since they revived people long dead like Washington & Roosevelt one wonders why not the whole bodies?

-A fine conjecture. I can see one thing; keeping long-dead people in jars would minimize space and food consumption. Of course I would go insane just sitting in a jar for eternity.

In someways I can see why Nixon was even more crazy than he was (giggles) Arrrrroooo!

Panel 3 seems a meta-joke, rather self-referential. But the Brotherhood of the Fedoras ought to be able to overcome whatever evildoers Perenelle Flammel’s “auction” has attracted to Tracyville.

Why the UNODC would contract a Central City spook is uncertain, though the Spirit’s far-ranging adventures may have caught their attention. I would, however, be suspicious of their intentions should they secure the formula for the immortality drug, if in fact it is the real deal and not a fake, as suggested by Willy007 above.

As for Perenelle’s eyepatch, while it might be Mike Curtis’s little inside joke, when I first saw it I immediately though of Basil St. John; maybe Perenelle’s “look” is a conscious reference to him and his never-ending quest for black orchid serum.

Or, just for the fun of wild speculation, could this “Perenelle Flammel” (with Mom’s red hair) actually be a disguised Starr Twinkle St. John?

^^Besides containing the big reveal about Moon people living to be a thousand years old, the 10/15/1964 daily is a great example of the imaginative, stylized, wildly creative art that characterized the Space Era. Bold and beautiful work by Gould.

Perenelle’s eyepatch = Basil St John?

    Black Orchid Serum?

Perhaps a Brenda Starr appearance somewhere in this storyline?

Given that Lunarians are biologically compatible with Terrans, I’d guess they might actually be genetically altered refugees from either Mu, Lemuria, or Atlantis.

    .

Makes as much sense as anything.
